S70/3 635 hp ??

Hi everyone!

I've read on a BMW 8 Series related page, that McLaren introduces the S70/3 with 635 hp in 1996 for their standard F1's.
This is new to me, do someone know anything esle about this?

( BMW uses the S70 & S70/1 for their 8 Sereis at the beginning of the 90`s )

The S70/3 went into the 1997 F1 GTRs and then later into the BMW V12 LeMans racers. It wasn't fitted to any F1 road cars to my knowledge.

#073 had even more power than is listed for the S70/3. My guess is that #073s engine is simply a tweaked version of the S70/2 or S70/2 GTR LM.

I would imagine that the S70/3 is not designed for road use and may have some comprimises in regards to weight and engine life that would be acceptable for a race car, but not for a road car.

I am sorry to tell you the revised version S70/3 was put in 95 F1 GTRs and continuted to 97 GTRs although regulations stipulated limted output 600hp at 7500rpm. but the displacement of 97GTRs dropped to 5990cc thanks to stroke reduction of 1.1mm.

If that's what the great book says, then so be it. I was drawing from memory and don't have a copy here at work to reference.

The one point I hoped to make is that the S70/3 wouldn't be found in any F1 road cars.

Re: S70/3 635 hp ??

I'm guessing this is a typographical error, but on the Historical McLaren Cars, Ltd. site, the 1997 F1 GTR is listed as having an S70/2 GTR while DA has S70/3 GTR for all F1 GTR.

One more thing in DA, the S70/3 GTR was also said to have 636bhp, not 635bhp.

Just to throw a spanner in the works:

627 Bhp = 635.7 PS (hp DIN)
