Cool Nigel Mansell's 1993 CART champion, fully detailed, Tamiya Lola.

I built this way back when this kit was first released. I took a driver from a Formula One kit and detail painted it with Texaco/Kmart colors. I sectioned the rear/side body cowling to open like the real car, fully detailed the engine bay and used several etched fasteners.

I used aluminum AN fittings and wire from Detail Master to detail the engine bay. Reference pictures of this engine bay were very scarce back then.

I used guitar string for the antennae.

I honestly think that this is the best formula car I've seen. With the right perspective and without the driver figure It would pass for the real thing!

Excellent detailing process on one of Tamiya’s best formula car of all times. For those how don’t know this is a snap-loc model, its build without a single drop of glue.
Just one correction, in that time (early 90’s) the championship was named Indy Car World Series, not CART.

Very nice!!! Very good work, and it looks great!

In the sixth pic, the edge of the rear right wheel looks a bit blue, this happens on real cars, did you do this to the tire or is it because of the way the picture is taken??? Either way, it looks great!

For a snap together kit it would have to be one of Tamiya's better kits.
You have done a great job on it.

Thumbs up

Stunning!
Alot of effort on painting the driver too.
Appreciate the efforts you have put in Veyron.

Veyron,

That is an absolute stunner! I once had this kit in my hands, but actually never bought it. Thought it wouldn't be worth it. But man, you proved me being wrong, very wrong. Amazing what you did with it. The only remark I have is on the figure. The blue on Mansells helmet should be darker andn the visor seems so thick... but apart from that. TOP JOB!!

Thanks all! It's a great kit, just needs little extra attention. The helmet decals are from Tamiya's F189 kit, they look a little light in the pic, the visor is out of scale. If I built this model today I would do some things differently.
