Retapping a stud hole?
One of the exhaust manifold studs broke today when i was pulling off the manifold. I was wondering if i drill and retapp it if the stock size stud will fit or if i will have to get a larger one. Also if you guys have any advice on this let me know. what have you all done when you break a stud, and if youve taken it somewhere how much did they charge to retapp it.

Re: Retapping a stud hole?
Drill the onld stud out. Then helicoil the hole. The helicoil size is M8x1.25, same as the stock stud thread size. If you get the kit it will come with a drill bit, if not, you need a 21/64s bit to make the tinal hole. Get the 30 dollar kit, its easier.
So drill out the stud. Make the final hole at 21/64s. Thread for the helicoil insert using at least medium strength loctite. Thread it in. Let the locktite set. Use a scredriver or punch to bust off the "tang." Thread in the new stud. This is a VERY common problem, and this is a common procedure. Hope that helps.
