overheating and shaking problems

I just bought a 92 Camaro Z28 which has two problems: it is overheating and is shaking when I brake. The thermostat seems to be working and someone at an autoparts shop told me that it sounded like the air intake needs to be replaced. Any thoughts on this and shaking?

I cant understand why the air intake would need to be replaced because of an overheating problem.

I would suggest checking around the rad near the bottom. Alot of times leaves and stuff can get stuck up in front of it. Also there should be a big plastic spoiler that sticks down just behind the rad to push up air. That can also cause overheating.

The shaking is most likely from warped brake rotors.

possibly your tires are out of alignment or have some wierd wear too.

alignment wont cause shaking. if there is pulsation in the pedal then the rotors are warped. if your steering wheel is shaking then the front wheels are out of balance. if your seat is shaking then its the rear wheels that need balancing.

Welcome to the Forum!

Overheating is pretty common in these cars but its also easy to avoid.. As mentioned, make sure your rad fins arent clogged up real bad, your air dam is still in place (underneath the car right infront of the rad) Let your car warm up to operating temp, and grab the upper and lower rad hoses.. If the upper hose is cool, and the lower hose is very hot.. chances are your thermostat isnt working.. Also grab the upper rad hose and squeeze it.. When you let go you should feel a surge of coolant going through.. This will tell you your water pump is workin OK!
Make sure your fans are coming on at proper temps, you could have a faulty fan switch or relay.. Check all your rad hoses, make sure they arent corroded or collapsed.. its fairly common..

My air dam is pretty scratched up from steep driveways and such, thats not too detrimental right?

naw, it only causes problems when it falls off completely and just to clarify for people, the air dam is not the chin spoiler its a black, flat, plastic peice, that bolts under the car, about a foot and a half back from the chin spoiler, under the radiator, to keep hot air from circulating back uunder the radiator.

air damn also directs air up into the radiator, thats why they over heat on the highway without one...
