98 SL2 hard to start and runs like CRAP

I just picked up a really nice SL2 with 100K miles. It is in perfect shape except for the engine. I have to floor the gas to get it started and chuck a few revs to keep it running. There is definetly a leak in the exhaust I think at the flex part up front but other than that I cant figure it out. I order a scanner on ebay but it wont be in for a while, Any ideas on what to check or does anyone know how to get the codes manually? Thanks for your time.

Re: 98 SL2 hard to start and runs like CRAP

poor idle: commonly bad ECTS or clogged EGR

poor acceration, low top speed: commonly bad catylitic convertor, maybe caused by a bad ECTS

year engine mileage?

Its a 98 with the twin cam 16 valve. I bought a cranksensoe today and a temp sensor, only I found about 3 sensors that look like the temp sensor, which one is it? I bought the one for the computer, not the gauge. ANyone know? Thanks

Re: 98 SL2 hard to start and runs like CRAP

the earlyier saturns, til 94 or 95 use different sensors for the gauge and the PCM. after that, including your 98 uses only one for both. it is in the same place as in that diagram. only real difference is the EGR valve, so ignore that spaceship-like thing.

Re: 98 SL2 hard to start and runs like CRAP

Hey guys, I changed the temp sensor and the crankshaft sensor and it runs great. Starts right up and idles fine. The temp sensor was corroded and cracked. Now I gotta replce the exhaust pipe from the cat to the muffler. I changed the plugs and valve cover gasket, ( it was leaking into the first spark plug). But it runs great, Thanks for all your replies. Rick D.
