I had this problem.
I had to change the float in the gas tank. You will have to drop the tank or take off the bed to get to the float. Hope this helps.

Re: fuel guage not working, 87 yota pickup
thats crappy
is this a common problem with the 80s pickups ? how do i find out how many sending unit to guage wires there are on these trucks ? just one or more than one ? positive or negative run through the sending unit out to guage ? empty send more or less ground or hot ? im thinking that first i would want to check the wire near the tank to make sure that its got no signal >? thanks

Re: fuel guage not working, 87 yota pickup
ok i found out that if you unplug it then the fuel guage should go to full, well i looked and all i can see out of the top of the tank is a pair of wires together and yellow round harness connector under there at pass side frame rail top by the tank, i unplugged that and the needle didnt move at all, with key on yes,
is either of those two wires the fuel guage sender wire at all then ?> or do two wires go to F.I. pump ? im removing the bed most likely tomorrow, this will help things along, i might even pull the sender out and check to make sure the kid that put in the new fuel pump before i had the truck did it right and to make sure the floater is still on the sender unit arm wiring diagram looks like shows brown wire for fuel guage from the tank sender unit right ? thanks for anythign
