350 to a 700r4
Ok guys I looked at tranny pans on ebay and matched up the tranny thats in my 88. Its a 700r4. I want to put it in my 82 that has a 350 tranny in it. Someone mentioned a tv cable and I dont know if my 82 has one or not plus most of the computer stuff was removed once the carbed 350 was dropped in her. I have the 700r4 plus the driveshaft, converter, and flywheel. Also someone said I would need to move my crossmember a couple inches. The main thing im worried about now is the tv cable and making sure it works correctlly, also someone said something about a lock-out? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

well ridge you pretty much convered most of it. im on my way out the door right now but if you have any more questions tadster i will look when i get back in a few hours. defenetly read up on stuff on that web sight ridge gave you. i dont know if you will be able to understand everything cuz it does get pretty technical and even i had some trouble at first but it explanes pretty much everything. and bowtie overdrives makes about the best kit i have ever seen for putting a TV cable on a carb. no one else makes a more screwup-proof system, that i know of, and its simple to install too,(the hardest part is figuring out what carb you have and it even explanes that on there too).

Sweet, I kinda have abit of an understanding of how it works but now what Im really worried about is that lock-up thing. I dont know what I need to do there because I heard that if you have the original converter you dont need a lock-up but then i've heard no matter what you need a lock-up so im really confussed there.

well i ran mine for a while without the lock up kit installed with no problems.. but if its something your worried about go ahead and get the kit and install it.. just one thing less you have to do in the future when you do decide to get a stall converter

What does the lock-up really do? will it mess up the trans if I dont run it or should I use the original converter? I just want to be able to drive down at highway speeds without it turning 4200 rpms.

Without sounding stupid here, but that still leaves me confussed. I mean really all its getting at is it makes it easier on the tranny to tow and drive up and down hills. I just dont want to mess up my tranny, I dont plan on towing anything and there really isnt any big hills here where im at. Basically is this a must have, will it mess up my tranny if I dont use it? I know I need to get the tv cable for it or will the kickdown linkage work instead?

honestly i dont think its bad for the tranny but im not 100% positive, and i would order the tv cable kit with the base plate for the carb, thats what i did

yeah, as far as the lockup, i dont think it will hurt anything if you run a lockup converter withought being wired for it. it just wont lock up. all it does when it locks up is it creates a solid coupling between the engine and the trans,(no sip and no torue multiplataion). its basicaly an economy thing. it will give you better millage and it will make the tranny run cooler. thats why they have the manual override switch thing to lock it up in 2nd and 3rd gear when twoing so that if your pulling a big hill and have to use the lower gears you can lockup the converter and it wont burn up from the slipage. you will never need the lockup in the lower geras unless your pulling a big hill and cant get into 4th. then you might. i would sugjest wiring it up though so that you do have it. its not a big deal but it will be better than not having it. you can also get aftermarket converters either with the lockup or without the lockup, persoanly i would always run one. the only time i would say not to is if it is spacificaly a drag car only. not being driven except at the strip.
now for the TV cable. i dont think the detent cable brackets will work because i dont know if the cable will phsyicaly attack to them or if they will give the correct geometry, it needs to be perfect. i would just say order the right stuff. then you will have no worries at all. unless you yourself put it on wrong.

yea i agree with 68... get the kit... cause the cables wont be the same length etc... and that will mess up the adjustment

So as long as I use the 700r4 converter and get the tv cable it will be fine then correct? I just want to make sure. Also I have a 350 engine in my car will the coverter bolt up to the flywheel?

yup sure will... if you have it adjusted correctly...if thats the flywheel from when you have the th350 on your car then no... you have to use the flywheel off of the car you got the trans off of.... well you dont have to any 700r flywheel will work but you get the idea
