Completed McLaren MP4/4 - Ayrton Senna - Pictures

I have been reading this forum for a while now, and I finally have something to share with you. I am a very slow builder, and this Mclaren was started sometime in the beginning of 2002, so it will probably take a while before I'll have something new after this one
I'm a Belgian modeler (I've noticed there are a few of us on this forum); interested in F1 cars and McLarens especially. This is only my fourth model. It is the first one that isn't straight-out-of-the-box, so I've learnt a lot during the process. Modifications include:

- separating the front wing from the cowl
- adding Marlboro decals
- detailling brakes
- lots of wiring
- scratch-built controlbox on sidepod
- pipes for cooling
- emergency switch
- painted CF-pattern on brake cooling ducts and air intakes
- lambdasensors

Sorry for the poor quality of the pics, it's the best I can do:

This is an absolute stunner!!!!! Love it! What technique did you use to pain the CF pattern?

A suggestion if I may: next time when applying decals trim them, meaning cut off the excess clear film around the decal edges for an even better look.

Am I going blind? I can't see any decal carrier film in those pictures!

Amazing, great work!

The CF was painted using an old nylon stocking. (a new one would probably have been better) The part was first painted with Tamiya's X-18 semi gloss black. Then XF-56 metallic grey through the stocking. Make sure you use little pressure on the airbrush and spray a few mist coats without moving the stocking. After this had dried I applied X-19 smoke untill the color matched the color on my reference pics.
Offcourse you can't get a super-clean pattern as with the decals, but the result is good if you want a CF-effect.

This is a picture I took before the smoke coat, after the metallic grey coat:

Thumbs up

Welcome to AF HHugo.
What a great presentation card! All the time you have spend in this model was well reworded since it is simply amazing. It is beautiful in any angle and the engine detailing process is amazing.

Really great Mac there Hugo. Picture quality is fine too, at least in the reduced ones. Apreciate you sharing your tip for painting the CF as well.

Welcome to AF we need more of these kind of subjects around here. I don't think you're that slow a builder - all good things take time!
