Re: ignition timing

I presume from your name, this is for a 1974 Bug. First a few questions.

Carburator or fuel injection?
What distributor do you have?

Timing classic Beetle engines is based on the installed distributor. The year of the car or engine has nothing to do with it. Many of these old Bugs have had engines and/or distributors replaced somewhere along the line, and the original specs are no longer valid.

There should be a plate or numbers stamped on the distributor body. they will be something like:

0 231 176 033

Once you have that you can get the correct timing procedures and settings.
