My 98 Civic LX (about 72k miles) would sometimes rev so low to the point of dying. This would happen whenever I'm not applying any gas. The car would start ok and have a good idle (around 1000 rpm) but after some driving, the rpm's would go down whenever I put it in neutral or depress the clutch without pressing the gas; often to the point that the engine would almost die. The car runs normally on the freeway though. The check engine light went on this morning. Any ideas to what could be happening?

There is a screw on the back of the throttle body that controls idle. I think if you screw it in it lowers the idle if you loosen it, it raises it. Pick up a helms manual and look up Idle Screw.

Re: Dying in Neutral
I changed the spark plugs today and the engine still has the problem. I'm not an expert but I don't think I have to play with the idle screw because it idles fine when I start the engine. The idle goes down after a couple minutes after driving.
