Question 98 ford ranger xlt super cab auto trans problems

98 Ford Ranger Automatic Transmission Slips!!!

I have a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT super cab with an auto transmission. I got it used from a reliable car dealer about a year and a half ago (part of my divorce settlement).
This week, while driving on the freeway (65-75mph) it slipped out of gear. My RPM's went up and I let off the gas. (since it wasn't in gear anyway). After a few seconds, it went back in and I tried to baby it home. Then near home, It did it again, but took a few seconds longer to go back in. It seems to drive fine in town with 1-3rd gear, but not in OD

So since then, I haven't left town and drive with the OD/OFF and on streets that I won't be going over 40 mph on. I need to take the freeway agin in a couple weeks and need to get it fixed soon!

Got any ideas on what the problem is? I check the fluid level, it was fine. Checked all the fluids while I was under the hood.
Please, no stupid or crude comments when you reply.

I got it fixed! Transmission Solutions in Eugene found that a pan gasket was torn and leaking. they replaced it, two "O" rings, and the 4x4 filter and filled with new fluid. It seemed to solve the problem. let's hope it lasts!!!! I think I got off pretty lucky with a bill of only $233.00
