'71 Boss 351 VS '71 Camaro Z28
Hi: i'd like to comment a little bit about the comparison between the 71 boss 351 and the 71 Z28 camaro. first of all it should be realized that
the chevy camaro 350 engine had much smaller cylinder heads than even the boss 302 and that they in stock form could not out flow even the regular 302 windsor intake ports which were very small like the camaro's were. sure the camaro's intake ports were slightly bigger than the small port windsor heads but barely. on the exhaust side of the sbc head the ports were a little bigger but not by much, and they had descent flow capabilities. now fellas dont get me wrong, I also like the sbc camaro's but the real truth of the matter is that the sbc engine could never flow the volume of air that the boss cleveland engines could, those who really know the differance between the two engines can easily see that there is no comparison, the boss will simply make more power. after all the boss 351 engine is capable of flowing the volumeflow of that of the BB engines of both BBC, and the Chrysler hemi engines. so how can you compare the power potential between the two smallblocks. hey I love you all, but the real truth should be known, about all of this stuff: hey if you dont want to believe me, then just ask about a guy named "BOB GLIDDEN" who took 10 NHRA's world championship prostock dragracing titles from the rest of the pro's using 351 cleveland engines to win. Also he won at least " six " world titles using clevelands. least |

Re: '71 Boss 351 VS '71 Camaro Z28
Cleveland based engines have won more championships for Ford than any other series of engine. It was in production for 4 years in the US. A production iron 4bbl cleveland head can be made to flow over 350cfm intake and around 240exh with porting. That is more than almost all of the aftermarket aluminum heads available for any small block. And two companies just put out aftermarket aluminum cylinder heads for the cleveland, CHI and AFD. I think CHI makes 3 versionss, AFD makes 2(but they're severely backordered on their new head). Edelbrock says its going to produce a 351c aluminum head by the end of this year, I've heard as early as late july/august. The AFD and CHI heads are incredible. At 2002's Engine Masters competition, Dave Storlien ran a 351c with CHI heads, and he came in second. He made the most HP, and in qualifying he was #1. I think the numbers were 605hp out of a 357ci motor(.030 over cleve) spun to 6500rpm. The CHIs flow 330cfm out of the box.
I'm sure you know this, but the boss 302 had modified 351c 4v closed chambered heads, in '69 they actually put larger valves in the head, not 2.19/1.71, I think they were 2.25/1.76. As you probably have guessed, I own a cleveland. Its an open chamber 2bbl headed motor that is currently being rebuilt. The 2bbls are nothing to scoff at either, even though they are the 'small' cleveland heads, they have the same size valves as the 'big valve' SBC heads! I've got 2.07/1.71 1 piece stainless ferrea valves in mine, exhaust sides thoroughly ported, and once the motor is together, a pair of turbos will be hangin off the front. Engine analzyer predicts(using stock head flow #s, not guesstimated ported) around 800hp and 750ft/lbs. If you want a full rundown on what is going into the build, check out my website: http://www.turboslut.net/tbuild.html Its a long list, hope you don't have any plans! |
