I have a 2000 Altima GXE with about 65,000 miles. Having owned an Accord prior to this I know the importance of changing the timing belt in a timely fashion. My manual maitenance schedule refers to changing the timing belt at 105,000 but has a footnote that says something like "Pathfinder, Frontier only" (maybe some other models, too, but no Altima). There are no other references to a timing belt change. This would lead me to believe that it uses a timing chain instead of a belt, but everything I have read says that Nissan did not go to a chain until 2002. So two questions, does my 2000 have a timing belt or a timing chain, and if it is a belt, when should it be changed? Thanks for anything that someone might have on this issue.

Re: 2000 Altima Timing Belt
Your 2000 Altima has the KA24DE engine, which has two timihg chains, they should last the lifetime of the car. I've got a 93 Altima with 223500 miles and the chains have never been replaced.

I will have to agree. My mechanc told me that he has not replaced a broken chain on a altima since they were introduced. He has replaced and repaired lots of other things but not the chain.

what about 99 Altima's
So do the 99 Altima's have timing chains also? i'm looking for a good daily driver w/out the hassle of having a timing belt replaced.
Thanks for any help Last edited by fender1; 12-12-2004 at 11:50 PM. |

Re: 2000 Altima Timing Belt
