Idle Speed Specs - 1988 2.3 LD2
Can anyone tell me what the idle speed specs are for a 1988 2.3L (Grand Am)? I am mostly interested in the "in drive" rpm's (no load from A/C, headlamps, etc.). I know that this is ECM controlled; but mine runs about 850-900 rpm's in gear, and that seems a little high to me......Thanks

that sounds like a normal idle speed to me for that type of engine. the lowest your idle speed can be set at for your car would be 700 rpms, But it may not work that well, for some reason the early year G/A's (85-91), if you set the idle speed at a lower idle, the car would have a tendency to stall out more. My fathers 87 runs around 850 like yours, when it was set lower, every time he would come to a stop the car would idle down too much and would stall. Try it out at a lower Rpms, you may or maynot have problems... good luck

Re: Idle Speed Specs - 1988 2.3 LD2
Thanks for the info. The general consensus I'm getting is that the 900 rpm idle speed for the quad is normal. Seems to me it used to run a little lower; I did recently pull the throttle body apart and I did not replace the flat gasket (eeek)...I have ordered one and that may tweak it down a little...
