warranty/recall and dealership trouble

Just came back from an appointment at the Schaumburg, IL Nissan. First they told me there was no recall for the fuel sending unit, and if there was, they would be the first to know because they are the biggest dealer in the midwest. Second, I told them my truck (with 47,000) miles on it has a cracked exhaust manifold(I can hear it, and my buddy who is a Nissan tech heard it too) they said it would be $50.00 to look at my truck and I would get the money back if they find out that the manifold is cracked. Is this some dealer bullshit? Or do they all do this type of thing? Should I complain to Nissan directly about this? I think I'm just going to take it to the dealership my buddy works at even if it is a far drive.

The recall is new, they may not have been notified yet, you certainly haven't been. Wait until you get the official notice from Nissan before bringing your vehicle in for a recall.
As for the $50 charge to check for a problem, well, yeah, if there's no problem found, or the problem isn't covered by warranty, you'll owe for the diagnostic, but you shouldn't have to pay prior to the check in the first place. Either way you shouldn't have to pay a penny for a cracked manifold @ 47K, so don't worry about it. Me, I'd say just wait another 14K or so before having the manifold checked/replaced, no sense putting miles on the new one during the rest of your warranty period since it's not terribly uncommon for the replacement one to fail as well. Better to put off that potential second replacement (on your bill) as long as you can and live with the current one until the warranty is about due to run out.

uh i have to argue to offroads comment about waiting to fix the manifold, a cracked manifold can cause serious problems. if you wait to long over time the cold air coming in to the engine can warp a vavle and then you are looking at a several thousand dollar fix that wont be covered under warranty, and besides the manifold should be covered by a recall or warranty

13k is not going to cause the problems you're mentioning. Considering that Nissan has written off exhaust manifolds as an expense of using the same old engine, why would they do so when it could cause even larger engine failures. Manifolds are going to fail with this engine design, putting it off towards the end of his warranty cycle is going to keep him having to drop another $500+ for the fix later on.

Re: warranty/recall and dealership trouble

No way a tiny crack is going to allow "cold" air to get back to the valves. It takes a pretty big hole for that to happen, and nobody in their right mind is going to put up with the racket a hole that big would cause.
