Turbo Prices

Why is it that every turbo kit I find has a $10,000+ price tag? Honestly.

The first thing that confuses me is that they all use an external wastegate. With the low boost and low airflow that these turbos are producing, they could easily go with an internal-wastegate turbo and save more than a thousand bucks up front.

But, unless logic is escaping me, it seems it should be priced more like this:

Turbo: $1000
Piping (custom): $500
ECU: $500
Fuel System: $300
Intercooler: $500
Boost Controller: $300
Clutch: $500
Misc: $500

With a buffer, it should come to under $5000 start to finish.

Why on earth do the E36 turbo kits cost so much? Now, my turbo knowledge isn't BMW specific, so there must be something that i'm missing... that makes up that extra $5000 friggin' dollars.

What's going on?

Because companies think BMW owners are rich so they rip them off for every penny they have.

Re: Turbo Prices

Building a turbo kit for a BMW isn't any more complicated than building one for a Honda.
They charge those inflated prices because they know people will pay them.

That's not entirely true. The fact is, German-Engineered cars don't take well to tuning. Much more time and effort is required to make modifications work. ECU tuning is way more difficult than that of a honda, for the fuel and ignition systems are more complex. Sure, you label the hardware prices, but think: Do all turbo systems cost the same? You can definately build a turbo kit for a benz or bmw with cheap parts, but when you blow up your motor (like hondas and toyotas do regularly) it will be nobody's fault but yours. Eurocars require the best parts. Get the best parts available the first time, and have your turbo last the life of the car. That's how I build them.

Re: Turbo Prices

when I had my E36 M3, I paid like 4k for everything (turbo, wastegate, air filter, blow off valve, turbo timer, ecu, intercooler, y-pipe) and I did the install myself.

Re: Turbo Prices

Honestly, you get what you pay for.

Companies like AA put countless hours of R&D into their kits.

Turbo's aren't for BMWs IMO. They are deriven from N/A race cars and turbo lag isn't very N/A like!

Eurosports soon-to-be-released Twin Screw Opcon supercharger should be $7,000 and produce 345 hp @ the wheels, and I believe 280lbs of twist with almost a perfectly flat torque curve starting at 2,000RPM to redline. On 8psi with stock internals, catback exhaust, Eurosport reprogrammed ECU, 91 octane gas (this is in california.. it is basically detuned. You will get a lot more power from a car that is tuned for higher octane fuel as most states can get it.

Turbo's aren't that great.. Ive been living with Turbo cars for ever and they are horrible when it comes to lag, you can't get rid of it.
