Question Guy put wrong gas in my car.

I got gas yesturday and I always put Super in my car. I have a 98 Supercharged GrandPrix GTP. Well the guy put regular unleaded in it instead.

Now I drove for about 30 miles got home and when I went to go back out again. My car seems like it's missing or something, It hesitates when I hit the cas. I went and put some STP and Ultra gas in my car.

You think this will help. Another thing my Service Engine Soon light is on now.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Guy put wrong gas in my car.

I hear you, but I just want to make sure that is what is the problem. I think it has to be. My car was running great until then.

Nothing permanent will be harmed. Just take it easy until it is burned off. The lower octane fuel needs less timing advance than your car provides. If you push it you will get combustion knock that CAN damage your engine. When it gets low 1/4 or so then fill it up with the right fuel. You will notice improvement a few minutes after you do this due to the higher octane. Then continue to push it only to the point where it knocks then back off a little. By the second tank it will be back to normal. The alternative is to drop and drain the tank. That wont be cheap.

The engine won't knock It has a knock sensor in it, which retards the timing when knock is detected.
The regular fuel will not harm your car. Peak power might be off a bit, but that is all.

I strongly suspect your check engine light is completely unrelated, but likely is causing your drivability problems.

Some of the higher performance cars will still knock as the variability of the timing is limited. Most of the newer ones (including this one) will not knock bad enough to damage the engine. However since you describe a knock I would check the EGR valve right away. The EGR can really change the fuel/air ratio and cause knocking. Definately get the light checked out. It could be something that will get worse and leave you walking home. It could even be the EGR valve. Good Luck.

i wouldnt go crazy about it yet, wait until you go through another tank of gas, and get out and pump it yourself this time and see if you still experience these problems, my feeling is that you wont. If you put the engine under a strain, do you hear a knocking noise? Thats a sure sign you have detenation.

There's no knocking at all or pinging. It's just hesitates when I push the gas. If I had to compare it to something close to it , I guess it would be like when a trans slips alittle.

the problem could still be gas related, if you are sure you got 87 octane. How many miles on your engine? do you know the compression ratio that it originally had? I still would not get too worried until after you put high test in and run it through another tank.

Well the car is still running like shit about about 3 tanks of high test. It probably needs a major tune up.

It has 77,000 miles on it.

The way the car is running now is. At idle the tach moves up and down about 1,000 RPMs, it doesnt stall though. When I take off the I can feel the loss of power and the hesitation. The car seems like it's strugling and when I"m crusing around 50 the jerks alittle, it's like someone is tapping the brake pedal. And when you stand and listen to the car from the rear, it has a putt-putt sound coming from the exhaust.

The SES light is still on and sometimes it blinks. I'm just going to have to get a computerize diagnostic down on it.
