1998 Durango Tranny Clunking Sound!!!!!
Hi,
I have a 1998 Durango SLT 5.2L 4x4 Automatic Transmission and since I bought it used a few months ago a clunking sound has been happening when I engage my reverse, even when Im going foward and it shifts from 2nd to 3rd is a hard shift,,, sometimes when Im driving and the tranny is about to shift if I just happen to let go of the gas a second or two before it does it will clunk too..............? I took it back to where I bought it and they rebuilt the whole rear end and the transmission already,,, I also took it to the Chrysler dealership to have them look at it and they suggested loading some new updates for the PCM and I did cost me almost 100$ on labor and nothing happen still clunking, Im afraid it might get worst and might have to rebuild the tranny again Im running out of ideas,, if I cant find what it is Im going to loose my mind,, either that or just end up selling it ![]() Thanks in advance for the help! Re: 1998 Durango Tranny Clunking Sound!!!!!
Have a look at the U-Joint at the end of your drive shaft. Maybe your noise is coming from there (although excessive play in a U-Joint is hard to miss when someone rebuilds a rear end).

Re: 1998 Durango Tranny Clunking Sound!!!!!
These should have been obvious to the dealer:
Front or rear u-joints (but usually there will be a vibration) Slop in the transfer case Front axle joints/ differential Front sway bar bushings Transmission and/or engine mounts. Finally, they didn't rebuild the trans properly or completely. I don't think reprogramming is going to solve your problem. Slantsixness

Re: 1998 Durango Tranny Clunking Sound!!!!!
Well, the dealer said that my sway bar bushings are squicking and need them replace, also my inner tie rod ends and lower ball joints which shouldnt mess with that clunks according to them. Yes, I did the program updates but didnt do a thing....

Re: 1998 Durango Tranny Clunking Sound!!!!!
You should sit underneath the truck and listen close while you get someone to shift back and forth between maybe reverse and neutral, and see if you can figure out where the noise is coming from...
If it's clunking, there must be something mechanically wrong, I don't believe a computer screwup could make something solid hit another solid piece and cause it to make a clunking sound. It just doesn't seem right to me. There must be a simple explanation for this... |
