Largest Tire for Stock 81' CJ5

I'd like to know what the largest tire you can put on an 81' CJ5 with little or no trimming?

thanks

Back in the late '80s I bought an 81 CJ with 33x12.5 on it, which fit with no problem. However, they were too wide and tended to pull the Jeep all over the road. I put on 31x10.5 and the handling was much better, with no loss in off road ability.

Also the smaller tires helped the gearing too, if you have a manual trans. First gear low range was still too fast with the bigger tires for serious off roading.

Yeah I would say around 30 or so should fit fine, depends on what you want as far as look, handling, gas mileage etc...

I'd agree with the 31x10.5x15 thats what is on my '81 7 with no lift and 3.31 open gears and a t176.

It all depends on what factory suspension you have on the jeep. My Cj-5, 7, and 8 all had special ordered suspensions on them with the biggest leaf springs, towing packages, lockers from factory, etc... and I can fit 33x12.50x15 on them easy. Just for a general Cj-5 I would say you could at least hit 31X11.50's easy if not a little more.
