Unhappy '94 740i forgets it's auto transmission

BMW 740i with auto transmission occasionally (especially when cold) will not downshift (i.e. when stopping at red light) and feels like a manual tranny that is left in 3rd gear (car starts to lurch and jerk). Shifting into neutral for a second solves the problem...back into Drive and I'm off with no problem. Problem occurs in both D5 and S4 gears.

Have also noted occasional jerky up-shifts lately. Am I necessarily looking at a $6,000 new transmission?

93 740i same problem

I did read some where that a valve body replacement will fix most trans problems. It usaly costs $1000 rather then $6000. I am waiting till I get some money before I look into it. I just hope it lasts till then. Let me know if you find out anything else.

Hi, Guys - I just had a valve body replacement done on my '94 740iL. It would go into reverse only when it wanted to. The local dealer gave me a great lead on a Transmission shop that specializes in European who did the work for $490. They installed an OEM rebuilt part with a warranty and it is now SWEET. There are some excellent guys out there. Advanced Transmissions in Greenville, SC is one of them. They were adamant that as soon as you sense a problem, you should at least get a reputable technician's opinion before you blow out a reverse drum or something worse.

Greetings-

It sounds as if I am having the same problem...Dealer wants to replace the transmission and I am fighting the fact that the transmission is bad. After the valve body was replaced have you had any more trouble? Mine appears to having trouble in two areas: One when driving at 60 mph it can't decide which gear to shift up or down to and in some instances it boggs down....

How as your repair worked???

Thanks

Dale

Best thing to do is to contact Kirt Koeller who's an expert on these transmissions and from what I've heard, a heck of nice guy too. Contact him as listed below but please come back and tell us what he said and the results.

Re: '94 740i forgets it's auto transmission

i have a 94 740il, my trans died and i was quoted $7500 to replace it ...auto sports unlimited sold me a remanufactured zf 5hp30 trans for $2600 plus $900 r/r at the shop (bmw auth.); so even with a totally frozen trans. it cost $3500. i love auto sport unlimited because i love my "7"
