When I bought my '99 SS, it had a 3" cut-out with a block-off plate installed. The sound of the open pipe was great, but what was better was the look on the faces of unsuspecting mustang owners when I punched it.

However, I found that off the-line performance was increased, but it sacrificed top-end performance. Also, I got tired of crawling under the car and removing the 3 nuts everytime I wanted to "have fun".

I eventually ended up upgrading to a QTEC unit from Quick Time Performance (QTEC stands for Quick Time Electronic Cutout). This device is great. It lets me open the pipe in seconds, just by flipping a switch. If I need to tone it down, I just flip the switch again to close her up.

You can get these from their web site at :

Re: Cut-outs

Electronic cut outs are the only way to go. Getting under the car to open the thing up sucks ass.

Re: Cut-outs

only downside i can think of, is added attention from the cops. if you think that isnt a problem, open em up.

the only problem with those is they are to small. atleast for me. i run 2 1/2 in pipe and those are like 2 i.d. and 2 1/8 o.d. i think. so if i put them on my car they would be restrictive so i dont really want those. but i love the concept and design. if they or anyone made them with 2 1/2 i.d. i would defenetly buy them.

Re: Cut-outs

Do you guys run the cut-out before the muffler, or before the cat, or what?

Re: Cut-outs

yup. but i like the design. simple yet effective, and effective without any trouble, like jacking up the car and removing some nuts and stuff. and yes like he said, right after your headers, providing you have headers.

Re: Cut-outs

when my car was a bolt on car, i picked up 8hp and 9lbs-ft torque at the wheels all the way from 2500rpm to 6k by opening a 3" cutout mounted under the passenger side rear seat. for $60 ($30 for the flowtech cutout and $30 to have it welded in) you cannot beat it! Even with headers and no cat, the cutout was not too loud for authorities... throw a set of heads and a nice cam in and it will be much louder though!

Re: Cut-outs

no, I still have a 'wing nut' one. I still open it occasionally, but it is Extremely loud with my setup now. I only open it when I take the car to shows and cruise nights now.
