95 Del Sol SI or VTEC?
Ok, after looking for many months for a newer car (currently have a 2.8 v6 1987 Firebird, that kelly says is worth 2300) I finally foudn the car I have wanted like no other. Question is, should I got with the SI? Or the VTEC model?
Basically what I looking for is a daily driver with some style/power. You know, being able to stand up against the newer modded cars. Doesnt have to be super duper fast, but I would like to be able to look at the guy in the next car with his fartcannon and know that I have a good chance at whoopin his butt back to wally world for his next mod. So, SI? Or VTEC? On a more personal note, I would love to keep my FB, but its jsut taking up too much gas, she needs to be on the drag track not the street, so thats why im looking for something that will service me better. EDIT: Oh one other thing, just HOW bad is it to stick a few minor engine mods on one of these and then drive them in the winter? Does it really hurt it? or would it be ok as long as i didnt push it hard during the winter? Sorry for the newbieness, just somewhat new to cars, but VERY intrigued and interested in them. |

Re: 95 Del Sol SI or VTEC?
umm if you have a choice between an SI or a VTEC then it would be foolish not to take the VTEC !! thast just common sence, and time of year has really no bearing on the engine at hand..the car on the other hand blows in the snow and so forth..but thats gonna come with any small sport compact...Honda engines are far more reliable and user friendly then that 2.8 headgasket blower GM your used to running...you can do many external mods to the b16a2 VTEC application and still have more than enough of a reliable vehicle..just dont go buying cheap junky parts and youll be fine ! oh and the gas milage between the 2.8 and the 1.6 Vtec isnt gonna be that big of a diff. just to let ya know

Well i get about 170 miles to a full tank on my current Firebird and she runs clean. I hoping for more aroudn 250-350 miles per full tank.

Re: 95 Del Sol SI or VTEC?
well a VTec is going to draw more fuel than a SOHC standard top...you could get a D15 (1.5 no vtec ) and you would see much better fuel economy..but its going to be a dog on performance....basically performance and fuel economy dont usually get along to well...350 to a take is pretty damn good economy..none of my cars have ever gotten 350...250 maybe..but not much more and thats all highway ...if you want a honda and you want the best economy..get an S with the 1.5

Re: 95 Del Sol SI or VTEC?
very true, which is why i hinted at going VTEC right off the bat..but then stated that they wanted superior fuel economy..in wich case a S model would be the best choice...I say screw the extra few miles and go VTEC but if its milage that is sought after then thats not the case

Re: 95 Del Sol SI or VTEC?
Ya I think I'll be going VTEC here. I make roughly 2k a month Plus comission and what not, so I have some generous money to play with, could ya suggest some "quality" mods? Name brands would be nice so I dont forget which ones to look for.

Re: 95 Del Sol SI or VTEC?
Here's a general rule of thumb:
Stay away from eBay mods. Good products are not going to be cheap. As for which brands, you start getting into opinionated discussion. My personal opinion is an AEM intake (which I have and have been very pleased with) and perhaps an RS*R cat-back system (performance without excessive noise). For the exhaust manifold, you start getting into another highly discussed area. Best bang for the buck is the DC Sports header, but you could always get a Hytech header for over $1,000. It's the best on the market for performance, but not cheap. The DC Sports is about $200 - $300. These are just the first steps toward a more powerful motor. Intake, header, and exhaust system are good starting points. You could purchase better ignition wires and from there it will just depend on what you want to do with the car. F/I or N/A. Figure out how fast you want to go and how much you're willing to spend and that will give you the information you need to start looking into other avenues for performance.

Re: 95 Del Sol SI or VTEC?
Apexi, HKS,Greddy, AEM,Venom,JUN, Skunk2 are good ones to stand by..but it varies depending on part..but stick to those for guidlines..and rememebr if something is much cheaper than the others..theres always a reason
