New Jetta driver, need your advice!

I'm 16 years old, and I am purchasing a used Jetta in the next few weeks. Looking to get a 2000-2001 GLS 1.6T. I've always heard that Volkswagen makes great cars, but I saw a few mixed reviews on the web which got me thinking.

I figured I'd go straight to the source and ask the Jetta owners. Are there anythings I should stay away from, things to watch out for? I just dont wan't to make a mistake when purchasing this car. Please feel free to share all your advice that you think could be useful to me

I've got a black 2001 Wolfsburg I've got my eye on. It's got the 4cyl turbo and has 51k miles.

buddy's jetta

My buddy has a '98 Jetta. If they're anything alike, here's what I would watch out for.

WINDOWS! Make sure the windows work properly. Window regulators and motors are expensive. Within 2 weeks, both front windows, and rear driver side window were down. But at least the sunroof works...

Cruise Control. We still haven't looked at his yet. Maybe we'll do that tomorrow.

shocks. He's had problems with stock shocks going out on him. His aftermarkets seem to be doing well though. He got some kind of sport shocks.

That's about all I've noticed with his car. I love driving it. Jetta's are nice... but beware those stinking windows.

those earlier year Mk4's had their fair share of problems. just to list a few..
window regulators as stated above
MAF sensors
02 sensors (rear one i believe)
coil packs, esp. in the 1.8T's
fast wearing brake pads

hopefully the car you have/are getting has had these recalls done. good luck with it
