if i get a new ka...

i'm still workin my 2 jobs at near 80 hours a week this summer for my engine swap (among other things). i've decided that the 240 will be garaged this winter while i drive a beater (back to a good 'ole honda crap-mobile). time is not a concern here but i'm still tryin to decide between the ka-t and the sr20. i love torque and grew up around muscle cars so i think the ka-t may be the way for me to go.

heres my question tho:
if i get a new ka24de to turbo charge, say a used or rebuilt one, is there a difference between one out of a 92 and one out of a 95-98? i'd rather get a newer motor.

i don't think there's any major differences, only between the 89-90 ka and the rest of them

Re: if i get a new ka...

doesn't the 95-98 used internal coils...like there isn't a fifth wire on the dist. cap.....

Re: if i get a new ka...

- S13's used external coils and S14's used internal coils.
- The exhaust manifolds are different. The S14 manifold is a 4-1 design and the S13 is a 4-2-1 design.
- S14 uses a cat that sits much closer to the engine and the manifold is shorter than the s13 manifold.
- The S13 manifold is longer and places the cat further back under the car.
- S13 EGR pipe entering the exhaust manifold sits at a different angle.
- Intake manifolds are different as well, but only on OBD2 models. The OBD1 S14 (95) uses the same lower portion of the intake manifold as the S13. The upper portion of the manifolds are the same, but the lower portion of the S13/S14(OBD1) manifold places the TPS in a different place.
- S13's have a secondary butterfly valve, which can easily be removed.
- OBD2 S14's have more vacuum ports than the S13/S14(OBD1).
- Valve covers bolt down in a different location as well as the upper timing chain cover.

Most of those things won't matter since you are getting the whole motor from either an s13 or an s14, but if you were swapping parts then some of those could be an issue. If you do swap parts, then keep in mind that you must use the harness for the motor; i.e. You can't use the s13 harness on the s14 motor without rewiring. You can use the ECU from an S13 on an S14, but you must use the S14 harness.

yes you cannot forget that the newer ones are OBD-II, which sucks major ass. OBD-II came into effect in 1996. So I would go with a 91-95 motor, or not even a 95, just get one from a S13. If its rebuilt it doesn't matter much about what it did previously

Get vinyl prep, if you don't the paint will crack, vinyl prep makes it look like fibreglass would.

j_spec, my s13 has external coils, i think. like vsiev said, the internals have no 5th wire on the dis. cap. mine does, so doesnt that mean i have external coils. plus my ign. coil is easily visible. im so confused now

My bad, my dyslexic ass typed it backwards. S13's used the external and the S14's used the internal.
