Motor oil to shine tires?
I have heard that motor oil is a cheap and effective way to condition and shine your tires. Has anyone else heard of this, and does it work good.

Re: Motor oil to shine tires?
I don't know about it shining your tires..... but it's a hell of a way to do a hell of a burnout

Re: Motor oil to shine tires?
I saw a professional detailer talking about motor oil and shining tires on TV a few months back, but I caught the tail end of the interview, and the details are a little fuzzy.

Re: Re: Motor oil to shine tires?
I think I saw the same same show. He said something like apply it twice in a week, then every month. I tried it twice and hardly notice anything, I'll stick with my good tire dressing.

Re: Motor oil to shine tires?
Yeah, thats the same show. I do remember him saying something along those lines, I also think he said that something about the first few applications aren't to noticeable, but as you keep applying it it gives you a better shine than some tire dressings.
I'm going to try and find the article somewhere on the speed channel website.

Re: Motor oil to shine tires?
I know an old school body guy who tells me that every Saturday he would clean his tires with ajax, paint the white walls, and shine the tires with vaseline. "But that was BEFORE they ever had stuff like armor-all"
I guess that was back when men were men, and sheep were nervous Never mind......I'm going to bed.......

Re: Motor oil to shine tires?
I'm going to have to try that trick with the Vaseline. I'm in the process of trying the motor oil trick right now, and it seems to be working after a couple of treatments.

Re: Motor oil to shine tires?
I am pretty sure the motor oil trick looks good for a day or so, but dulls out very fast. That may be why you heard about a professional detailer using it for a show or just a weekend, but over time it will dry the tires out and dry-rot (if the car is not a daily driver. As for Vaseline, I think it doesn't stay on the wheels long. As you drive it slings off, even if you put on a thin coat. Stick to Tire Shine. The AJAX- Great product. Always use something good to scrub the tires before shining them.

Re: Motor oil to shine tires?
Engine oil has additives in it , some of those additive can eat rubber. Use a solvent based tire shine or armor all on the tires cus thats all its good for to me.
Fricking using oil to do bunouts lmao , dont get the oil in your rotors or calipers or you could kill yourself. Use bleach for burnouts , makes better smoke.
