thermostat location on 97 z24

i did a search on this forum, where is the thermostat located is it by the water pump by the timing chain cover or is it behind the upper radiator hose inlet ( this is going into the engine). I need to know cuz i brought my car from my brother and thier was a coolant leak coming from the area and i crawled under the car and seems he dropped it and its stuck in between the tranny and the engine under the car, and it is stuck, cant get it out. So im wondering if this car doesnt have a thermostat in it the computer is stuck in open loop, explaining why it runs like shit...

and it only revs to 4 grand still, he ran through a ditch after hitting a deer and the pass side is kinda dented, not to much damage, pretty fixable but might i need a new computer?? i checked all the wires routed under the radiator and they all seem to be ok no damage or anything..

what can i say i bought the car for 200 bucks i can afford to put a couple bucks into it.. And it only has 375,000 miles on it. A salesman owned it before him and was always on the road. car is hardly rusty, i mean here and there. If you dont believe me i can take a pic of the odometer LOL

thanks for the replys in advance any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: thermostat location on 97 z24

when you look at the motor it is right under the water pump unbolt the bolts i think there is 2. on the black tube that runs under the motor rigth up to the water pump. so it might be easier to do with the car up on a lift or high enough to get under it on your back... hope this helps.

i talked to some parts guys today and they said the same thing, on all of your cavs is this downtube from the thermostat bent in any way?? or flattened cuz it is on mine and i think its restricting the water flow?? like i said he ran through a ditch after boucing a deer off his hood...

ya its flattened on the bottom but from where it comes down from the thermostat its flattened, ill just leave it as long as its not hurting anything,

but i do have another question, the revving to 4 grand thing, my buddy says he had a monte carlo and his did the same thing. got it checked out and it was a bad neutral safety switch?? and it only does it in park and neutral, but its different when its driving in the gears down the road. my car starts in neutral and drive, i havent torn apart the center console yet but will tonight, see if there is a wire off or something? could be?? dont make any sense but im willing to try anything. the water pump is fine cuz thier is no coolant coming from teh weep hole adn when if first start it the top hose is cold and then it gradually get warm, so the thermostat is working and the water pump has to be pushing some coolant so that is a good thing.

i got a new fender for it in purple which is kewl cuz i dont have to paint it now hehe

any answeres would be greatly appreciated..

ya 375,000, rebuilt transmission, i figure i would drive it till it dies and then put a rebuilt motor in it, body kit paint all that, its not rusty at all so?? what the hell.. i only paid 200 for it, so i can put a little money in it. and yes it is an auto,

where is the rev limiter on the car?? is thier a sensor somewhere??

also i put in a full tank of gas today and i got home and noticed a gas smell, what the hell so i look under the car, drippin like crazy, bad or cracked hose somewhere, i am going to wait till it stops leaking and then get under there.

but im figuring if thier is a gas leak in the line somewhere, and the check engine light is on, there isnt enough fuel pressure to make the car go past 4 grand?? is that right in my assumption??

or is it a rev limiter thingy?? Is that in the computer?? should i get the computer reflashed?? of course i will take it to auto zone and get the codes read and reset..ill keep ya posted.

Re: thermostat location on 97 z24

When you are in park or neutral it limits to 4 grand... my 200 does the same if you have you puter reprogramed you can set it up higher than that. but when ur in gear you should be able to rev to about 6500..

Re: thermostat location on 97 z24

i got er scanned and the iat valve has high voltage and the knock sensor is detecting knocking..

so ya i let er sit and my car has a huge gas leak somewhere in the back. Leaked out 1/4 tank.. Yikes.. so its done leaking now so i gotta check that out..

if its knocking really bad its prolly the gas that was in it.. cuz it leaked a bit in the garage and i opened the garage door to get all the fumes out, and i figure id just burn it off, not to big of a deal,, shit wouldnt light?? since when does gas not light on fire??? so ya bad gas it is..

freakin cars i tell ya..

so replaced the iat valve no change but no code this time, then take it in to auto zone and he says code is knock sensor malfunction, i just did a search and a guy was having the same prob cept his motor only went to 3 grand... Got the knock sensor replaced and says it runs great..

So i got one on order and itll be here Tuesday.

The never ending money pit has reared its ugly head!!!
