exhaust smells rich

my 90 rs camaro 5.0 liter smells like its running rich
but its not smoking

As long as your 02 sensor is workin.. it shouldnt be runnin rich.. And if it isnt workin your engine light should be on.. But ive seen stranger things

id say thats what it is, i put a new one on the
drivers side manifold, i guess the one next to
the cat is probally bad then, thanks.

I Think that the one next to the cat is just to let you know your cat is workin properly, if your cat isnt workin, it triggers that 02 sensor and tells you your cat is bad.. I dont think the ECM takes any A/F data from that cat..

well my check engine light comes on after
driving about 10 miles and wont go off til
you turn off the engine. but it only does it
every once in a while. i run 92 octane in it
to, would that do it.

well the high octane could do it. if your not getting complete combustion then it would smell rich. i would look into the sensor though, and for future reference, unless you got the engine modded and the timing advanced you dont get any real benefit out of running 92 octane...just in case you want to save some pennies...

If your engine lights comin' on.. Thats probably a pretty good indicator that your 02 sensor could be shot.. That or maybe an egr problem thats causing it to run rich..

Scan the ecm for codes and it'l give you a better idea of whats goin on

valves rattling under acceleration doesnt sound good. i would think that you might want to look into that rather than just using higher octane, IMO, granted i dont know much about these things...

A problem with your EGR system will cause "valve ping" and valve knocking under acceleration.. The valve could be slow to open or not open at all.. This could also contribute to the car running rich, And it'l also turn the engine light on after it gets warmed up as you described

ill check it out then, i had figured that the
valves were just worn out it doesnt clatter
when i run the 92 octane in it, i bought gas
for my tacoma today and the valves clatered
a little bit but i put 87 octane in it, i think the
gas stations have been getting bad gas, or
watering it down

thats very likely.. I try to stay away from shady no-name gas stations.. or gas stations that sell that wheat fuel bull$hit, or ethynol..

Scan your codes.. I'll bet it gives you a egr fault code!

haha i wish!! nah they sell gas and food, its like a 7-11, a subway and mcdonalds in one store, they call it made-to-order, the subs are good as shit and the fries, yumm damn i might have to run up there, after 4pm a 12in sub is only 4.99!! and gas is like 1.67 a gallon now
