which TurBo to get?
Ey, I was wondering what do you guys think is the best turbo to get you into 12's with the least turbo lag? I've really learned a lot about dsm's through these past weeks but is there any where I can read up some real good info so I will really be familiar with the car and what is best for it? This last question might seem wierd, but what does a average car(just a estimate) @ a street race usually run(1/4)? & about how much $ is usually on the line from the racers during a race?..... just curious

Re: which TurBo to get?
#1 dont think a bigger turbo will automaticly get you faster
#2 you can run a 13flat(maybe high 12) on the stock t25 if properly tuned #3 1/4 mile is the standard race at the street races, most people dont bet there

Re: which TurBo to get?
First off...Street raceing is a joke, real racing happens on the track where there's no BS excuses, just you, the other car and the tree, it becomes obvious very quickly who can run fast and who can't. This Fast and Furious crap is BS. Take it to the track and have your fun there.
To answer your question a regular 16g which is very cheap, (they have kits to install em on your 2G DSM) will run into the 11's, the new EVO 16g is a bit nicer and a bit more pricy. I ran 12.4 on the stock 14b turbo on my 92 Talon years a go with minimal mods, put a 16g on and promptly ran an 11.8. IT's all about having all the correct mods in place AND knowing how to tune and drive your car, not too much of one and not enough of another. 16g is very streetable too. I've seen folks with 20'gs only runnning low 12's due to the fact thay don't know what they are doing. |

Ehh, I agree with #1 and #3, but I believe #2 is incorrect. From what I've read, it's tough enough just to get the stock t25 below 14's. I highly doubt anyone can reach low 13's high 12's on the stock turbo. |

Re: which TurBo to get?
I thnik one of the fastest runs on a T25 was 13.14@103 with an AWD. Most folks struggle to get below 13.4

Re: which TurBo to get?
Exactly, intake/exhaust/MBC 2g's are supposed to run around 13.7 give or take. Race gas would help but it's not going to do miracles.
To answer your question, most medium sized DSM turbos have run 11's. All 16g's can do it, but the question is really going to be your supporting mods and tuning. A small 16g might run high 11's, but I don't think you would see anywhere close. Again I'll have to say EVO16g is the turbo to get right now. Biggest 16g, and barely more expensive. |

Re: which TurBo to get?
One of the problems is the restrictive 2g head also, you're not going to make the power a 1g does with the same turbo.

10.5sec92AWDTALON, I believe in exactly what you said but the thing is I don't believe there are ANY tracks around my area. Also, the Evo 16g was what I was looking at or maybe the small 16g because the regular big16g has the most turbo lag right? Also why is the Evo 16g cheaper than the regular small16g & does the Evo spool up faster than the smalll 16g?
Thx for all the info. so far |

About lag, certainly all else being equal the bigger the turbo the more lag and poor throttle response. Ideally you want to size the turbo so your maximum air flow through the motor falls with it's operating range comfortably. |

Re: which TurBo to get?
Stop talking about lag. 16g's are the smallest turbos DSM people even use for a decently fast street car. They have the least lag of a large variety of turbos. That said, the SMALLEST turbo that YOU will run mid 12 seconds on is probably a big16g or EVO3 16g.

Re: which TurBo to get?
a stock t25 will get you around 13 ___ if properly tuned. me and a couple buddies of mine have succesfully made very low 13 seconds on the stock turbo. all it takes is a little engine tuning with your basic bolt on modifications... and its just not a day job. fuel curves are what rapes most people out of the high 12s.
less than $1k and a decent mechanic will get you realy close to 12second racing

Re: which TurBo to get?
oh, and lag isnt that bad.... my little automatic solves whatever lag problem anyone would ever have coming out of the hole.
60ft. = 1.767sec

Re: which TurBo to get?
The fastest time on DSMtimes.org for a T25 is 13.3--
It is tough to get a T25 into the low 13s, and I doubt that 12s are possible without nitrous. In short, there is no reason not to upgrade the T25 if you have maxed out that turbo with supporting mods--you will already be ready for a bigger one that will drastically increase hp. |

I ran easy 12.4's on the 14b on a weak motor with 135k miles on it and 11.6's on the small 16g with the same weak motor. Folks have actually ran into the 11's on the little 14b turbo too. Leon Reitman did an interesting test with a car reasonably well setup for a 20g, he ran the 14b to a 12.1 time, bolted on the 20g and ran an 11.5, so on his basic setup going from the tiny 14b to a 20g there was only about a 65hp increase. Cartainly the 20g can run into the 10's, but I've heard Leon later ran an 11.6@116 on the 14b for the record. I'm not saying small is the way to go, but.... it seems a lot of times folks go too big also and loose their throttle response for daily driving. People really need to assess what their real needs are before getting a big turbo IMO. If I was building a daily driver I think the newest EVO turbo would be my choice. |
