Transmission change (1948 Special Deluxe)
Im restoring a 48 special and its currently a manual but I want it to be an auto because of the driving conditions I am encountering. My question is it possible to get a trans for my car. And is it costly to do?

Re: Transmission change (1948 Special Deluxe)
Well, the short answer is no.
The '48 should have the power assisted gearshift (whoopie!) but they were never automatics. Now, there is an automatic that will fit the flathead 6 cylinder, but they're hard to find, and you'll need to get the brackets and all and the shifter out of like a 53 or 54 desoto/truck/dodge/chrysler/plymouth to do it. These transmissions were two speed autos, and kind of crappy, too. Now, throw a 340 and a 727 in it, or if you want a slow sled, a 225 /6 and a 904 in it and you'l have yourself a unique piece of nostalgia. But the manual trans in the original '48 was a breeze to drive, and bulletproof. So's the flathead six. if it spins, it'll still run. Like a top! Slantsixness
