Taurus revs surge, then stall & no power

Hi,

I have a 1998 Taurus SE Wagon which has recently started stalling. This usually happens when you come to a hault after a 30-40 min drive.

On the most recent occasion - with the car in neutral and foot of the gas - the revs started changing from around 800rpm to 1400 rpm, at the 800rpm end - the low petrol light came on, there is a click (relay) behind the dashboard and the revs then surge up to 1400rpm. Putting the card into reverse/drive causes it to stall, and there seemed to be no electrical power for about 4-5 minutes. It then starts normally.

Local garage is unable to diagnose the problem, despite running the car for hours. Any ideas?

Thanks

Bob.

Try checking the idle speed solenoid, it sounds like it could be sticking. Sometimes all it needs to fix it is removal and cleaning with some carb cleaner, then put it back on and you should be ok.
