i absolutely need a ney transmission for my 72 chevelle. it has a 454 (i don't know witch one caus it ain't matchin number). the car is originaly autamatic

so here si my dilemme: should i get a th-400(ans buy extra goodies like posi high gear differential), get a th-700, or make the step to the munci

i know if i choose this option i will have tou get a bellhousing, a chutch kit, a shifter kit, and a clutch pedal assembly... would it worth??? this is why i'm making this post

I guess it depends on what you are looking to get out of it. I kept my original th-400 in mine but set it up with a shift kit. I have never had a day of problem with it and it shifts very strong. I like the idea of having as much original as possible on mine but you may not care whether yours is original or not.

You should also look at the new Tremec TKO 500 and 600 (5-Speeds). They can handle 500 or 600 ft/lbs of torque which is good for a 454

Here are the gears for the tranny's

TKO 500: 1st (3.27) 2nd (1.98), 3rd (1.34) 4th (1.0), 5th (.68)

TKO 600: 1st (2.87), 2nd (1.89), 3rd (1.28) 4th (1.0), 5th (.64)

well like DGB454 said it kinda depends on what you want. if its going to be a drag only car then you might want to stick with the 400. cuz then you can run the different gears and not need to care about crusing. but dont forget if you do swap out the gears and drive it on the street, its kinda annoying running 70MPH at like 4 grand (just an example). now if you want to swap out the gears and put in an overdrive i would say go for it. they have a better first gear than your 400 and you also have a lower RPM for crusing. i would say you should probably run the 700. ok here i go again. CC5S keeps posting about those two transmiosions, (starting to get annoying), now if you wanted to go that rought thats up to you. but i would personaly go with the 700. you would only need a few extra things like the T.V. cable setup and the TCC control stuff. the best setup i have ever seen for the T.V. cable is from a place called bowtie overdrives. they also have eveything else you would need including the TCC lock-up (torque converter clutch lock-up). check them out if your interested in going that rought and you can read up on how to install both of those items and see what you think before you buy eveything and decide its not worth it. oh and just so you know if you buy anything from bowtie overdrives you get full color instrucions with it. they are the same instructions that they have on the web so you can basicaly lern how to put it in before you even order anything if you were going to. hope this helped some. http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/catalog/index.php

A stick is way more fun, but somewhat overrated as far as I am concerned. As DGB454 hinted toward, automatics can be just as strong and about as "fast" as a stick, you just have to tweak them right. If you've got the cash and don’t mind melting a hole in your floor, go for the manual!

yeah what color is that? i want to paint my 68 something but a little darker. oh, personaly i think a auto can be faster. but thats just my opinion. i do agree with you though that sticks,(in old cars), seem to be over rated. i love driving my dads 68 caprice with a 396 and a 4 speed, but it gets old after a while. thats why i personaly prefer autos with a aftermarked floor shifter. i love my B&M pro ratchet. its like ahving a stick but no clutch to worry about.

I'm not absolutely positive of the color (I can look it up if you want, I have a can around here somewhere) but I think its unofficial name is Viper Blue.
68chevelle, it looks about 10 shades darker when the sun isn't out, it has tons of metallic in it.
I can get a shaded picture to compare with tomorrow.

I have never driven an auto on the floor (mine is on the column). Is there much performance difference, or just the feel is nicer?

well its alot better if you plan on shifting manualy. my trans will shift at about 47-4800RPM's if i just leave it in drive. but i will run it up to somewhere between 50-5200RPMs when i need to. for that i defenetly think there is a benafit, depending on what floor shifer your talking about cuz they are not all created equaly, but ming i can only shift one gear at a time by just hitting it forward or backwards. forward to up shift back to downshift. each time i hit it forward or back it acts like a ratchet, hence the ratchet shifter, and returns to the same position ever time. i dont have to worry about going into revers cuz it has a reverse lockout, to run NHRA stuff if its an aftermarket floor shifter you have to have one. it doesnt really give you any performance difference other than more control over your shifting. but its way better than shifting off the column, oh yeah and i dont care but people think it looks cool. back in highschool kids would always ask me about it.

You can remove some tiny b-b looking things (forgot what they are called) and springs form the tranny to tighten it up and make it shift later. But if you modify it too much it will explode when trying to shift at high RPM.

Yeah, I just looked the name is "Viper GTS Blue Pearlcoat" for 96-97s. Color Code: PBE
The oem # has paint over some of it, but this is what i can read...
