Another Porsche 917K but coming as a "Hippie"

I decided to build that lovely Fujimi Porsche 917K with the Early Hippie Decals as appeared in Watkins Glen 6 Hours Race 1970. Iīm still in the very begining of the kit, but thought I share some results. I also decided to include that Studio 27 Upgrade kit.

Thanks for the support of p9o1r1sche, who helped me on some issues until now.

I like to hear your comments!

Re: Another Porsche 917K but coming as a "Hippie"

Your model's coming along well. I'd like to see the finished product. Just be sure to check fit the parts before gluing. I had to sand the edges of the side windows to make them fit flush with the body - probably due to the thickness of the paint on the body. Glad to see you went with the gray interior. The P/E steering wheel looks good. Looks like the shifter rod came up short. Mine went all the way back through the bulkhead. I have finished my 917 and will probably post pics later today.

I know I had major problemswith it. It was just too short. But I think, it wonīt be seen, when the kit is finished. Thanks for your tips on the side windows, Iīm not that far, yet.

Re: Another Porsche 917K but coming as a "Hippie"

Great start Don Vitto, although I have to say I don't like the PE seatbelts, they never seem to sit right. Other than that it is looking killer!

What colour are you using for the 'burple'? I also like the grey tub, it is afterall fiberglass on a tubular framework (with oil lines inside the tubes!)

Are you aware this version needs to have twin filler caps either side in front of the doors? Rather than the single one behind the drivers door, like on the Salzburg and Wyer Gulf run cars. The extra parts are included in the kit and the lines you'll need to cut are marked. Good ol' Fujimi

Oh and the hippie cars ran with a rear view mirror on the roof, don't know if that is in the kit too or will need to be scratchbuilt.

Since english is not my mother tongue?? I donīt really know, whats meant by the burble. Are you talking about the "bulb" on the roof, behind the windshield? If you mean that, I didnīt decide yet on the color, it may stay in that blue!

I saw that already and cut it out, hopefully it goes fine!

Re: Another Porsche 917K but coming as a "Hippie"

Sorry Mr Corleone by 'burple' I ment the bluish-purple (or purplish-blue) body colour.

Is the bulb on the roof the rearview mirror? the Wyer Gulf cars had a hump further back on the roof that was orange like the stripe. The hippy cars had a much larger silver mirror right at the front of the roof, with a hole cut behind it for the driver to see through. It is present even on the resored cars I've seen. Have you checked out the pictures on 917archive.com?

Well, I couldnīt get onto the page, because of to much bandwidth consumption??. The color I used is Ts-15 Blue by Tamiya. On the color chart it looks more purple, but I didnīt want to use the deep blue metallic or just deep blue. I didnīt want to have any metallic related effects on the car, you find mostly with deep colors.

As I researched I just need to get the bubble on top as rearview mirror, but I will research on that, when I can access the website.

Re: Another Porsche 917K but coming as a "Hippie"

If you are going to use TS rattle cans then Tamiya had a colour designed for the Raybrig NSX called "Raybrig Blue". It was a special edition colour but I believe they have now issued it as part of their regular line. It might be TS-57 Blue Violet. That colour would be much better than the straight blue of TS-15. All you choice though.

A shame 917archive is down agin, it only just came back up Here are a couple of pics I saved from the site, hopefully they'll tide you over until it returns. Judging by the file names, the first one is from Watkins Glen, second from Hockenheim 1970.

Are you going to get the rear bodywork on with the spare tire at that angle?

I tried the rear bodywork on that spare tire and it fits well. I might need to make some adjustments, weīll see about, when Iīm entering that part on the uild, but Iīm quite confident on that rear bodywork.

Well the silver bulb is the rearview. I decided not to sratchbuild my own one, due to no knowledge about scratch building, so I use the hump of the gulf wyer. nevertheless I will put the hole into the roof, so I think it will look almost like on the pictures, you included into the threat.

Secondly, I donīt think I will make a second filler cap hole next to the opposite drivers door, I just stick with the gulf wyer one included in the instructions of the fujimi kit. Actually, I messed up on that, didnīt think that the watkins glen had different filler caps spots

Hope, the whole thing remains somewaht original though!
