VTEC noise and test

My car is a 1996 1.6i SR Coupe.

Since installing the SRI (below pic) I've noticed a loud metallic whining sound at 5500 RPM and above. Presumably this is when the VTEC kicks in. I was just wondering if this is normal with this kind of intake, or is something wrong with my VTEC system? The intake is secured by a metal bracket bolted directly onto the body work inside the engine bay, do you think this is causing some sort of increased resonance during VTEC, or am I just worrying about nothing? Does anyone else experience this? I tried following the diagnostic tests in the manual. The resistance between the teminals on the lock up solenoid was about 16 ohms so I guess that's OK. Now here's where I came unstuck... the manual says follow the DOHC tests for the SOHC engine (D16Y8) as they are the same. So I was going to test the VTEC oil pressure switch.. but I couldn't find it! It's not where they said it should be, so does anyone know where it is or even if the SOHC engine has one? Saying that though, the malfunction indicator light isn't on, but I just wanted to do the test fany way for my own peace of mind. The only other way would be to drive around above 5500 RPM all the time and see if anything unusual happens... Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

don't worry about the sound, it's your intake doing it job. Sucking in air

Funny... I've searched the entire forum for a question about the VTEC oil pressure switch on a D16Y8 and guess what? No results! If you just don't know the answer, or even understand the question, why not just admit it? Don't you think it's lame to flame for no other reason than your own ignorance......??

Funny...I don't remember specifying which question gets asked all the time. I was referring to this one

What your hearing is the change in tone an intake makes on your engine. The original intake on the car is designed to silence the car (retarded engineers). So basically with an aftermarket intake installed all of your silencing mechanisms are gone and your car will sound louder and sometimes more high pitched at high rpms. As for the oil pump, i would assume there is one somewhere on the engine because thats how VTEC works. I wont explain the whole concept cuz you probably know or have a good idea yourself how it works. But i can if you would like.

Thank DCSupra1990 for a constructive answer. That's what I suspected was happening, but I'm still curious about the location of the VTEC oil pressure switch, described in my rather inexplicit Haynes manual. I suspect the DOHC and SOHC engines differ in this respect. Maybe Kicker1Solo, or whatever he is called, could share his infinite knowledge and simply tell us..... LOL.

We may be newbs now, but who knows..... after 15,128 unhelpful and unimaginatavely critical posts, we too may be clever f*cking "fanatics" as well, one day........

When I first got my intake I fell in love with the sound! I actually learned that the civic gets loud in a mean way by disconnecting the stock air filter I love the roar of the engine

Re: VTEC noise and test

I'd forgotten how tiny the sohc intake manifolds are..
I took a friend for a ride (who has a Mustang 5.0) and he got this really distorted look on his face when vtec carried us to 8400rpm.. I laughed when he asked wtf it was, and if he ever heard that sound in his car it means something broke, heh..
