I have 2001 Silverado LS Ext Cab 2wd with 27,000 miles. I am hearing a whining noise during the first several minutes of driving. When first starting to drive I notice it. I really notice it when doing about 35-40mph and letting of the gas to coast. I just noticed that If I shift to Neutral, while coasting the whining stops. I am concerned that I may have a Transmission problem. I have read the posts describing the Fuel Pump whining but it seems like I have a different issue.
I have also read in the Owners Manual about the Engine Fan Noise due to he fans being engaged by a clucth mechanism. Again I think it is something different based upon the results of shifting into neutral and the whining noise ending. I did take it to the dealership and accompanied a mechanic for a test drive. Of course I could we did not hear the whining during the drive. I did mentioned that the truck was warmed up and that I had driven 20mins to get to the dealership. He recommended, leaving the truck overnite so he could test drive it cold in the morning. I plan on scheduling this week. Any ideas? Thanks |

Re: Silverado makes a whining noise
My first response would have been the fan. Mine does this when cold just as the manual states. If you put it in neutral while coasting, try revving the engine slightly and listen for the noise. If it still happens, then it is not likely the transmission. I would check the fan and possibly the alternator.

Re: Silverado makes a whining noise
If it is indeed the fan, the manual for my 01 says that this is normal until the engine warms up - says it has something to do with the fan clutch. Live with it or replace the belt powered fan with an electric one.
