War... WWJD?

I don't think I would be wrong to say that a majority of the people who backed the launching of the Iraqi war would consider themselves to be Christians with strong "moral values". My understanding of the Bible leads me to believe this action to be inconsistent with the teachings of Jesus. I'm not intending to start a big fight so please don't take offense to my post. I only wish to understand the justification for what in my mind seams to contradict any religion or moral values. WWJD? Thanks.

War would not exist. Neither would terrorism.

It was taught to "turn the other cheek" when someone slaps you. After turning the other cheek however, I think the teachings are that a just war is ok, for instance WWII.

I consider myself a Christian and to be honest, would like to know why there are still soldiers there. I ask "WWJD" I would think the answer would be something like "not go to war."

Re: War... WWJD?

Everyone has to compromise their morals at some point. That being said, it's a whole lot easier to condone an illegitimate war when it's thousands of miles away. The war in Iraq? Pathetic, of course. I have no doubt most Christians would say they don't support war. But when it comes crunch time, they'd rather have innocent civilians die in other countries, not their own, as far from them as possible.

Thats about as true as it gets. For some reason the majority of American's supporting the war believe that it will prevent attacks on US soil. This thought is about as far from the truth as Iraq is to the US. Granted 9/11 was an extremely terrible event that should never happen again but, as american's what did we except to happen after what we do all over the world. Now with the attrocites in Iraq and Afghanistan I'm afraid to see what will happen to us next. I honestly believe we will take a simulatnious attack on North Korea and Iran, next will saudi Arabi then Palistine. Peace-

Many who back the war think they already have. This includes our president. Which leads me back to my question. How can someone who believes in His Word justify starting or even fighting in a war? I don't think they rightfully can, nor do I think Jesus would have.

Re: War... WWJD?

from what i can ascertain (and im no bible scholar) jesus was pretty utilitarianism. that is, he believed in sacrificing the few (namely himself) to save the many (the world).

also, jesus turned the other cheek, but he was no pacifist (temple traders anyone?)

i think jesus would justify a war if the case could made that the war was preventing some widespread disaster that counteracted the loss of life due to war. for instance, WW2, everyones favorite just war. those many soldiers died so the rest of the world didnt have to be ethnically cleansed by a mad man.

other wars, however, would be frowned upon, even some of the wars mentioned in the bible.

like i said, im no bible scholar, just a philosophy major. im going on what i saw in webbers "jesus christ super star"

Re: War... WWJD?

Keep in mind that (if you believe in Christ) he is the son of God so to speak. Christians actually believe that He is God in the flesh. Was God timid about wipping out Philistines at the hand of one of his Judges? Did he back off when he declaired that Sodom and Gomorah would be laid low? What about Egypt and the plagues? Jericho?

The thing is that since Jesus arrived on the scene things have changed. Or rather they were suppose to. He did preach love and forgiveness but His whole life was leading to one point. Dying for everyone. Would he have behaved the same if that weren't His mission here? What if his mission were to carry on with the way things had been for years? IMO there would have been a lot more cities laid low and a lot of Pharasees and kings wishing they would have repented long before He got there. I guess fortunately for us he wasn't sent to wipe evil from the earth.

Lazysmurf. I agree with your post. Very insightful for not being a Bible Scholar.

I'm curious as to why it concerns you. But that might be better left to another thread. Don't want to mess this one up too much.
