Question Backup lights out on 2002 Grand Am

All 4 of my 2002 Grand Am's backup lights are off. I can't imagine all 4 bulbs burned out at the same time, and I checked the fuse. Any thoughts on where to go next would be greatly appreciated!

Other then checking fuses again to see if there might be another one involved, perhaps there is trouble with ground wire

Where is the ground wire for the backup lights? Is it the same ground for other lights? I am not having any problems with the tail lights/brake lights. How does the car know it is in reverse so the backup lights come on in the first place? Is there a sensor on the shifter or linkage?
