SES Light and ABS

New to this so bear with me...I have a 96 Chevy Blazer S10. The SES light comes on and off. Sometimes it'll stay on for months and just go off and reappear again. Also when the light comes back on it's "usually" when the truck is stalling, it'll also have the ABS light come on as well when it stalls, but that goes off after the stalling stops. Sometimes it will start right back up, no problem, sometimes it has to sit for a few minutes before starting back. It seems I have to really keep the gas going through without slowing down before it stops stalling. I have had the EGR valve replaced and a new fuel pump and filter and vacuum hose. I have had the computer codes checked and no one can come up with a code. It's just about time for brake pads to be replaced, could that make the lights come on and stall the car as a safety feature perhaps? I know dumb question. I don't know about cars. Also do the 96 Blazers have a timing belt? Thanks for any help...we're at a loss!

Re: SES Light and ABS

Your blazer has a timing chain, not a belt. That has nothing to do with stalling or lights, brakes dont have anything to do with ses light. Your kind of vague still, need more info. Have you had new plugs and wires put in, those cause power drain, have you tested your fuel pressure, dirty air filter? is there any rattling noise under the car, if so, your catalytic converter may be bad, that causes bad power drains. exhaust system can cause bad performance. if your light comes on and off, that may just be related to the gas cap, usually the light wont reset itself on real problems, the gas cap one is very common for lights coming on. make sure it clicks a bunch when putting it back on, or if it still comes on, try getting a new gas cap. Let us know more about what has been done to the truck and possibly a code when the light comes on, autozone will check the code for free.

Re: SES Light and ABS

We have always been sure to put the gas cap back on til it clicks. I will have to ask my husband if it has had new plugs or wires...we have had it to 4 different mechanics and each one says that they have fixed it and then it starts all over again. My husband was thinking maybe the catalytic converter as well. I will get back with you and let you know what else has been done. Thank you so much!

Your best bet is to swing by your nearest Autozone parts store... They will pull the codes being set by your SES light.. Give us the codes stored that way you're not just throwing parts at it hoping it will go away.

Re: SES Light and ABS

We have had new plugs and wires put in. I will try to make it to Auto Zone today and see if any codes come up. My husband had the codes pulled before...just a couple of weeks ago and got nothing. By the way, my car stalled again and the ABS light came on and the SES light was already on. So I turned the Blazer off for 5 minutes and it started right up and the SES and ABS light was off. The SES light did come back on yesterday. The only time the ABS light comes on is when the truck stalls.

Did you check the cap and rotor? Pull the ignition module and have autozone test it... Could also be a bad ground or bad alternator... What's your fuel pressure (it should be around 60psi, can be checked at the shrader valve on the back of the intake) Any time the SES light is set off it should store the code.

Re: SES Light and ABS

No...haven't checked those, but will. Does Auto zone charge to test it? Thanks for your help so much.
