High fuel consumption - Mazda 323F 1990

Hello.

I'll try to be as short as possible, but I really need some help. Any relevant hint is greatly appreciated. I appologize if I missed the forum topic, hope you'll understand. Now, the story goes about like this:

About two months ago I bought a second-hand Mazda 323F 1.6i 16v 1990, an LX variant (no sunroof, no power windows, no power steering etc), and I'm in love with it. Now, as any other used item, it had certain "bugs" - little things, but annoying - rear bump absorbers, door locks gone to sh*t, air filters done, irregular oil changes, bla bla - the previous owner was really sloppy. Anyway - beside all the obvious problems, I have a mayor one. The fuel is not cheap - we all know that, specialy here. I didn't test it on an open road yet, but in urban enviroment - it wastes 15 liters of unleaded! I know it's almost 14 years old, but damn! 15 liters? Sorry, that's just too much. 11-12 ok...13 fine. But 15?! I know that the fuel pump on is not in a good position on the tank, so it leaks a little if I fill it to the top - but I patched it up well, so now it leaks just a little bit, at full load. I doubt it has any relevance, eventual vapours or anything. Please, if anyone has any idea what can be the cause, I will look in to it. One more thing - it has a diagnosis box under the hood, but there is no qualified mechanic with equipment to read the trouble codes. Maybe it would give some insight, but at the time being - I'm lost.

Thanks for reading.

Sounds like you need a tune-up 3 gallons of gas burned up that quick.. check your spark plug wires they might be messed up. change them and your plugs. Air Filter and the normal tune-up stuff.. Your gas mileage should increase. You are in Europe right?
