there's a knocking..well sort of a rattle coming from the engine near the pullies...its not the valves cause it does not go away when i accelerate....
and if the valves made that much noise the whole engine would have quit by now....it been doing this for about a year... i tho8ught these engines made these noises....till i heard another 96 cavalier with the same engine...it was a lot quieter.. if any one might know what this is please tell me ... thank you |

What you're hearing is what I call the "death rattle". My 97 cav did this for about 2 years. The cause is due to your timing chain. Mine had this problem, until it pulled a piece of steel off of the tensioner. When that happened, it jumped time, warped all 4 exhaust valves, and cracked the head. I suggest a new timing set. Namely gears, chain, and a new tensioner.

Re: need help with a 96 2.2l
The timing chain guides are plastic and they wear, allowing the chain too much slack. The chain then flutters, giving you that rattle. Just replaced the chain, gears, guides, etc 3 months ago on mine. All is quiet now.

Re: need help with a 96 2.2l
theres a rattle in the 97 with 2.2L out here and i found that the tabs that lock the oil filler neck cap and stick down to the neck were broken and the cap was just sitting there rattling around making a metal rattle noise,
check that and make sure first hehee a/c compressor might be noisy too, check that ]
