would auto tranny work with a turbo?

i was thinking if an automatic transsmision work with a turbo. a lot of peole said it does as lon as you keep the boost down and then when you go higher you should get a torque converter.is this true? look this is what i found in a old sports compact mag:

Do turbos work with automatic transmissions?
Yes, there are many cars that come from the factory with both turbos and automatic transmissions. In fact an automatic transmission has the benefit of not closing the throttle between shifts, unlike with a manual transmission, where you (should) let off the gas when shifting. This means that the turbo continuously makes boost through the gears without interruption. You can also build boost before even starting, by putting load on the engine through power-braking (stepping on the gas & brake at the same time), which you can't do with a manual transmission.

what do you think?

Turbo's with Auto's typically work BETTER then a Turbo with a manual.

Not only for reasons stated by the magazine, but also because you can upgrade to a larger torque converter and build more boost off the line....
Allowing you to leave harder.

If you launch harder, you gotta be carefull about wheelspin. Too much and you will hurt your ET.

I think the biggest concern with the automatic could be keeping it from overheating and breaking down. This calls for a transmission cooler upgrade at least. (This was suggested to me by Jackson Racing for their supercharger, but a turbo should be no different in this case) A torque converter also helps from what I have heard. The thing is, the examples like the turbocharged Supra, etc. came turbocharged and automatic from the factory, meaning the transmission was meant for the turbo and meant for the amount of horsepower the engine puts out. Now, you turbocharge an auto Civic, and I know that transmission was not designed with a turbo in mind, or the 50 or so more horsepower the engine is putting out. I have actually heard people have some problems with the auto transmission shifting funny, the ECU gets confused or something, and it shifts at the wrong times.

Yup for the most part auto trans turbo setups are faster then 5-6 speeds
well I've yet to see a 5-6 speed faster then a auto turbo in the 1/4 mile
I have yet to really look into it but I do know that my Turbo Auto car was faster then all the other 5 speed models 0-60 and 1/4 mile

if your going for all out drag racing using a auto would be the way to go
if your doing alot of street racing or autox then a 5 speed is the only way to go

I've NEVER been in a auto civic I found that wierd sounding but Im guessing it would be ok if you got a trans cooler even if your cars stock if you run it at high rpms I would get a trans cooler just for the hell of it
