Just Got '92 4x4 Blazer

Can anyone tell me about this truck? Good and bad. All I know is that its a 4.3 and thats about it. I dont know anything about this engine. From the few days that I've had it...I can say that it seems to pack a lil punch when it wants to..even though I know its in need of a good tune-up, For one because the gas milage kinda sucks. Well..any info would be appreciated...any mods and anything of that nature would be coo also...thanks

Do you have the TBI 4.3 or the CPI Vortec 4.3? If it's a CPI, it'll say Vortec on the top of the engine. If not, then there will just be the big black air cleaner assembly. They are decent trucks, pretty reliable when taken care of. The motor is essentially a Chevrolet 350 5.7 V-8 minus two cylinders. As far mods go, 8.8 mm plug wires and good 2.5 inch exhaust will make the truck sound a little better an improve fuel economy a bit. A note on changing spark plugs, you will need to remove the front tires and access the plugs through the wheelwell. Some people loosen the steering shaft, in can be done either way. Rust is prone in the quarter panels and door bottoms as well. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Alternator will go bad at around 100,000 miles, water pump can be replaced too, it's a simple job.

its a TBI...it has 224'000 miles on it but the engine was rebuilt at 192,000...has all srvc records...and regularly maintained. Its runs great. Being that its a 4x4 is there anything that i should beware of....would car tires be better due to the fact that i dont 4wheel at all?...And since im on that..how do you know if the 4-wheel drive works?. there is a green light and yellow light that come on when i start the truck but they go off and nothing happens. Now when i turn the key back and then push one or the other, i hear clicking noises, not so when its on.

The 4x4 system is a complicated maze of vacuum tubing. Since you have push button 4x4, the light should stay on after you press the button. When you drive, you should feel the 4x4 working. In mine, I can hear it too. Since your light doesn't stay on, the 4x4 system probably isn't working properly. To go into four wheel drive, just press the green end of the switch and wait a few seconds. To go into 4 low, you will have to put the truck in neutral. If the vacuum tubing is all intact, there is a switch mounted on the transfer case the goes bad. Mine is okay, but it seems like a frequent problem to others.

As far as the tires, you can go to a set of car tires if you choose. It shouldn't make much of a difference as long as you stay with a P235/75/15. I run 30x9.5x15 Yokohama Geolanders on my truck because I tend to venture off road. Try to keep the tires the factory size, otherwise it will throw off the speedometer and odometer.

sorry to hear that....

they are actually competant little 4x4s for suburbanite offroading, and can tow fairly well short distances, but they break - everywhere - all the time.

ball joints, idler arms, all rubber bushings, rust, HVAC controls, O2S, brakes.....

isnt that the truth my ball joints just snapped today while i was driving down the road....but yeah they do pretty good off road i have a 97 4 door 4x4 all stock and my buddy has a 97 jeep cherokee with a 4 inch lift kit and some big ass tires and i have been able to go just about everywhere he has ....with the exception of me getting high centered on some nasty hill tops....but the 4.3 is a very reliable motor to bad nothing else is to reliable.
