996rs

Seeing as the 996 has lost some of the edge that older 911's (including the 993) have had, and that the only real racer in the lineup was the GT3 which is no longer in production, does anyone know whether Porsche will build a 996RS? Do you think they will? I certainly think they should as the 996 was softer than old 911's from the very start and the revised model is even more forgiving and GT-like than the original 996... i dont like the way its going for the 911, so i hope a 996RS is around the corner... something with no luxuries and slightly more power? say 340bhp in a 1150-1200kg body? its certainly achievable... fingers crossed

cheers,
jay

That would be aweosme! I think it might be in the works, but we if it was a possiblity, we most likely would have been told by now. I noticed that Porsche has been very busy recently and the Targa and C4S, weren't exactly know for a while, maybe there is still hope.

This brings me to antoher point, I'm so happy Porsche ahs finally expanded the 996 lineup to almost equal that of the previous 993! It's just nice to see the various models now, I actually really love all of them and those ads, whoever writes them should get some free Porsches, they're amazing!

Magazine, every Porsche ad is actually worth reading, there good. I saw a new 911 commercial and tons of ads for the current lineup.

One for the Turbo says: "I f you could choose to have any car in the world, which colour would you choose?"

I love them , my sig is one too.

As for the Cayenne, I'm optimistic, I love Porsche for what they are,, not who they are trying to be, I would have liked it if they put the funding and research into a new sports-coupe instead of the Cayenne, but I sorta like the Cayenne, it's really a big 911.

Not exactly what people are crying out for though, is it?
with the 911 getting softer and the Cayenne being added to the lineup it just doesnt make sense. the 911 should have kept some of its old characteristics if a new product was being offered for more diluted sports driving (Cayenne). Does that make any sense?

cheers,
jay

models and thoughts on the 996

While the 996 is "softer" and more refined then any previous porsche....pretty much all porsche's have been more refined then the previous model. I would expect nothing less. While the 996 doesn't offer the tendancy to snap around as easily it is still the fastest stock 911 around any track. A stock C2 996 will take a stock C2 993 or earlier porsche in about anything. it may feel softer or be "too" refined for some tastes, but porsche is doing what will sell more cars and make an overall better product. It may look like a GT car inside, but it is still pure sports car heaven in the engine and performance.

As far as the new models you have the:
C4S
C4 Cabrio
C2
Boxster
Boxster S
996 turbo
996 GT2
Coming:
Carrera Gt
Cayene
some sort of 2+2 Gt car to compete with the Ferrari 456
new boxster with around 280 HP
probably some i'm not thinking of right now

seems to me porsche has a lot on it's plate. Most of it good....though I do hate to see them making an SUV, but at least it is more of a "fast station wagon" then a suburban warrior machine like the explorer, suburban, etc. It reminds me of faster version of the BMW X5.

911's have indeed gotten softer, but it was generally felt that the transition from 993 to 996 changed the car too much in terms of driver appeal. it was too easy to drive the car fast and that takes away a lot of the involvement and therefore satisfaction.

maybe, except that i read that the base Cayenne will have 230bhp or so, which will leave it lagging way behind the hotter X5's.

Yeah , a 4.4 X5 has 286 hp , and there is the 4.6 HP(or iS as it's called in europe) with 340 hp , and X5 really goes nice in the corners , it's not what suvs are made for , but it really goes good compared to all other suvs

hmm..

The porsche Suv will offer 3 engine variants:
3.2 liter at 275 HP
4.5 liter V8 at 336HP
4.5 liter TT V8 at 450 HP (same engine that will be powering the 2+2 GT car they are making, probably tuned up even more to produce close to 500HP)
so it seems to me that the base cayenne will move just fine and the top of the line cayenne will spank anything from BWM or AMG in stock form. just the way porsche's top car always does!!

Still, the base model is in danger of being whooped by a hot X5 or sh*tty little hot hatches. Sorry, but that doesnt exactly fill me with joy.

cheers,
jay

Well, the secret's out now, the Cayenne has been seen and I don't like that much. The front facia is beautiful, but it looks like a minivan from the back, and those rims look worse than my garbage can lids, I'm sorry, POrsche should have stayed in the sportscar market, hopefully the final production model will be slightly better looking.
