Century Stalls at Idle!!Need Help

Hey everyone, I need some help. I have a 91 Century with a 3.3 V6. About a week ago it started to stall all of a sudden when i came to a stop at a light or stop sign. Car will idle in park all day long and runs down the road fine but will not idle at a stop in gear. About a week before this problem i started hearing a ticking noise that sounds internal(like valves need adjusting) but dont think the two are related. Anyways i assumed that it was maybe just bad gas causing the stalling so i added some dry gas and some injector cleaner and the car ran fine the next two days. Then it started stalling again and i then changed the fuel filter. This didnt help so i took the car to a shop to be looked at. After having the car for half a day and road testing it several times they said it was running rough but never stalled on them...computer diagnostic showed no codes...and the best they could do was to do a tune up and fuel injector cleaning. It then ran fine for a day and a half and i thought the problem was solved until it started stalling again. I dont want to keep replacing things and blowing money erradicly...have found some suggestions on the web like bad oxygen sensor, idle speed not set right, and bad idle air control valve, but would really appreciate it if someone could give me any other ideas...
thanks

well you are describing a scenario where the TCC solenoid sticks on, you dont indicate whether you have the 3spd or 4spd tranny. If 3spd then you can just unplug it, if 4spd then you have to fix it.

but I would also look at the IACM and the TPS....when idling if you blip the throttle on the motor, does it stall? if so look at the TPS.

Re: Re: Century Stalls at Idle!!Need Help

Thanks for the suggestion..didnt think of that. The car is a 3 speed by the way and no it doesnt stall when i hit the gas at idle...in fact if im in gear at a stop light and put one foot on the brake and rev the engine with the other foot it keeps the engine running and keeps it from stalling. I guess i will try unplugging the TCC and see if that helps. However I did some quick research on some other web forums after you replied with the idea and did find that most of the time that people had a TCC lockup problem the car was stalling at low speed after being driven on the freeway at high speeds for a decent amount of time. I only commute a few blocks on around 35-45 mph roads on a daily basis and the stalling seems to happen whether the car is warmed up or only driven a minute or two. Just wondering if that means it wouldnt be the TCC, or if it could still be the TCC. Any ideas would be great,
thanks

Re: Century Stalls at Idle!!Need Help

Just another quick question. If I do simply unplug the TCC and the problem goes away, can I leave it unplugged or should it be fixed?

with it unplugged u will lose 1-2mpg at least and also the p/n and high gear switches in the ECM which the latter will affect the spark table slightly

Re: Century Stalls at Idle!!Need Help

Hey guys thanks for the help. I unplugged the TCC soleniod and the car ran great for a day...the stalling seems to have stopped. However after about a day the transmission is acting funny...it jerks as I accelerate now and doesnt want to shift outta first gear. I unhooked the battery to reset the computer and plugged the TCC back in and the transmission is still messed up. Any suggestions?

Re: Century Stalls at Idle!!Need Help

Since the trans was already giving you fits, it is likely that there are internal issues requiring a good rebuild. Though you might try changing the fluid, you will typically end up with what is in the torque convertor staying there. You might try one of the servicing establishments advertising convertor flushing, but if the trans is damaged, it might get worse. Ray
