Race Card #58- Where'd everybody go?

Ford completely redesigned their big car for '65. Gone were the trademark round tailights and "buggy spring" suspended rear axle. In it's pace was a new all coil spring suspension and a crisply rendered body with stacked headlights and sharp edged body lines. But when they took the new car racing they found out the old styling cues and suspension wasn't the only thing missing.

When Ford got to the track it was like a bad episode of "The Twilight Zone". Everybody else was gone. Nascar decided the Hemi was too fast, to heavy and too expensive to be stock enough to run in a stock car and banned it. Wonder how they justify rear wheel drive V-8 cars now? Chrysler took their marbles and went home.

Ford had the best season in its racing history and attendance-wise racing had one on its worst. But that new Ford made a pretty race car even if it made a lousy aircraft. (more on that and Mr. Yarborough's "flight" later)

Here's the mount of the winner of '65's rain shortened Daytona 500 and both Charlotte races, the Holman Moody '65 Ford driven by Fred Lorenzen. Another great GatorBuilt ride.

Looks like the real deal with that background. Do you have any other pics(engine, underbody, interior) without the "race card" back drop?
