D16Z7 / D16Y8 Question(s)

Ok, I have a 97 EX, and was wondering which engine I have, the spec's on the engine, and what the hell is the difference between the two? Also, are both of these engines VTEC? Everywhere I look it says "VTEC II" but nowhere on my car says VTEC....give me some help here! (sorry I'm a civic newb)

You have the d16y8. 127 hp. Now I have no idea what you want me to compare the engine to, since it doesn't say, but yes, you have vtec.

Thanks, I was just wondering if I had the D16Z7 or the D16Y8, because I've seen both under my model car on spec sheets. It just confused me as to why it said there was two engines for one model car.

Different years. From 92-95 the Civic EX got the D16Z6 and from 96-00 it got the D16Y8

Re: D16Z7 / D16Y8 Question(s)

i dunno...the D16Z6 is an OBD1 engine, but the D16Y8 has a better flowing head, so I've heard. You could always do an OBD2 to OBD1 conversion for the D16Y8 I guess.

Ok I just looked on the front of the engine and actually proved that yes, I've got a d16y8....but anyways, why would you wanna change from OBD2 to OBD1? Whats the benefits?

Re: D16Z7 / D16Y8 Question(s)

Usually OBD1 equipped engines respond better to mods
