More on UTI, please...

Sounds interesting. How long does a typical workshop last? How much background does one need to have? My posts embarass me because what little I know about cars was picked up by buying parts and installing them. I'd love to have a chance to take a week and actually learn something. I'm most interested in Toyota's. I'm buying an '03 Camry, hopefully tomorrow: 13k miles, clean. I'm bored, though. I won't have any tinkering to do for a while. I've sunk to asking my friends if anyone needs a tune-up. Parmenides3

Re: Uti

My old roommate went to UTI, and one of my good-friends went to its competitor AAI.

The ex-roomie is now a tech for Mercedes-Benz somewhere in Cali, and my other friend now owns his own shop.

Just like any other program, as long as you work hard and smart, you'll get something out of it.

I should also mention, a third roommate, who also went to UTI, got his head lost in girlfriend problems, and ended-up dropping-out, and owing the school a lot of money.

In case you're wondering, I live in Phoenix. There's a few AF members who are Phoenicians.

Carrrnuttt- What do you guys do in Phoenix? Are you into street racing or do you go to the track? The recruiter from UTI said a LOT of cars are stolen in Phoenix. What kind of cars do the thieves mainly go after?

Re: Uti

Yeah, congrats. My school had a speaker come to my welding class and give a little demo on their school. It looked sweet, if I was serious about working on cars for a living I'd love to go there. UTI or WyoTech. I've heard good and bad things about WyoTech though.

maybe i could anwser you some of those questions .
The #1 stolen cars in phoenix is... Honda Civics
and we got two tracks , but they are 1/12 hours away from phoenix
Speedworld and firerbird
http://www.speedworldmotorplex.com
and because they are far from phoenix most people do illegal street racing .

My friend goes there. He's doing really well there, and will probably end up moving on to the Mercedes/BMW area after he graduates in October. One things he told me is, show up early, if you're late you're deducted points.

Re: Uti

I saw a commercial for UTI and it looked like a cheesy Devry type techincal school, but from what I've read it sounds sweet. Best of luck.

I used to work with a tech that went to UTI, he said the coolest part about UTI is that once you're finished, you can go back and take all the classes again...for free, and it can be years after you've already graduated. He said he learned a ton and it was well worth the money.
