C5-r street converstion progress
Here's my latest project (revell c5-r corvette) I'm not sure I know what I'm getting myself into, but I love corvettes but I'm not big on the stock box kits that are available. I want to give it the agressive look of the lemans corvette but I want it to be 'street legal'. It's an awesome looking car and I can tell I'm going to have some fun with this one. So here goes nothing.
I want to add regular panel lines to the body and putty/sand over the metal latches. I also want to remove the metal window trim and give it a more regular look. As for the wheels I'm probably going to use a set of 40 series tires with some chrome 18's (t.b.a.) and what color should this be? I don't want it blue, red, gray or orange. So if any of you have any comments or ideas of how to make this project a little easier on me, let me know. I plan to smooth over the two panels under the tail lights and smooth out the lip ![]() window panels will be leveled out ![]()

Well here's what I've done so far...baby steps.
I don't know if this putty is bad or what (white putty by squadron in orange and white tube), but it's so difficult to get a nice smooth look. ![]()

To get a smooth surface with Squadron you need to gradually work your way down with the sanding grits.
You shape it with coarse grit and and then use fine grits to smooth it out. A set of Flexi-Files from Micro Mark are absolutely needed for what you're doing. Especially the ultra-fine red one.

Here's a before and after pic of the rims I'm going to use. These xs tuning rims measured at about 19.5mm diameter which made them 18's at 1/25 or 17's at 1/24 scale according to the pegasus reference pic supplied by hiroboy. But using styrene at about .8 mm thick I added more than a milimeter and a half to the diameter of the rims bringing them to just over 19's in 1/25 scale (which is the scale of the vette.
Super props to GTI1800 for the motivation and instructions. btw. What brand has the best chrome paint or spray to get a better look for the rims? ![]() the sanding, puttying, priming is done. here's some pics ![]() ![]() ![]()

Those rims are killer! You really did a great job making them deep dish. Very cool trick!

Lookin' good! Alclad makes a chrome spray which is widely regarded as the best, but it requires an airbrush. you could always just paint the rims black if that doesn't work out for you. I'd personally get some different wheels, while those are racey they kinda aren't tough looking enough to go with the aggresive scoops and lines of the vette.

Re: C5-r street converstion progress
Very nice conversion. It looks great so far.
Are you using another kit for the interior? Or will you be using the tube frame from the C5-R kit? I think the Z0-6 interior would look sweet inside that body. I'm not sure it fits correctly though. Will you be putting the wing on? Or leaving it wingless? Can't wait to see more!

I would posit not to try to achieve a chrome look on your wheels because nothing short of getting them plated will really look chrome. I would just spray them with a good fine pigment metallic silver and clear coat them. Most silver wheels are done in that method anyway.

Well as for the interior, I don't want to just keep spending spending spending, so I don't really want to use another car's interior (I usually end up cutting it and using putty to make it more 'ice' friendly anyway). So I would assume I will just be doing the same with this one. I'm probably going to use an extra set of seats that I have around (either the amt eclipse racing seats or the bucket seats from the amt supra). Or I'll just use the passenger side as a nos tank resorvoir like the 2f2f skyline and keep the one seat that came with the kit. I see the problem coming with the doors. Being as would dremel off the bars, I would want some kind of panels to use for the inside but I don't know how i can get just some door panels. As for the wing...I just don't know...(decisions decisions)

Re: Re: Re: C5-r street converstion progress
no wing, vettes don't need them. btw, for your rims, i find, if you lay down a nice black gloss coat on them, and spray them with dupli-color chrome, they look good. but maybe leave the rims in the color they're in now, that grey looks cool.

There is only one thing I have used that looks as good as chrome and that's Kosutte Ginsan powder. It needs to be applied over a gloss black (enamel seems to work best). I didn't have anything around in gloss black apart from this old hotwheels truck so I've done the hood to show you how good it is. The glossier the surface the better. I found that it wears off of polished black plastic. It lasts best on enamel, especially if it's applied before it's fully dry. You can easily do complicated shapes by applying it with a cotton bud. HLJ sell it.
Here's a before and after. This is not quite as good as it gets either as this was just on an old toy car with tired old paint... |
