Re: Laptop question

There is, but it runs pretty slow (max of 28.8kbps from memory).

Re: Laptop question

T-Mobile is working some good stuff pertaining to that. Right now they have their Hot spots, but I bleieve they are growing from there.

If you're interested you might want to check out their website.

AT&T might have somthing now. I'm not quiet sure. I remember my dad hooking up his Nokia to his IBM, and it worked, but it was damn slow, as Oz posted.

I am running a cellular modem right now, but the standard here is different. I connect at 115kbps, which isn't all that bad. Here we have PHS and Cellular. One uses repeaters to a base station, which then transmits to the satellite (phs) the other uses a repeater to transfer to the satellite directly, and has a much better range(cellular or digital).

With PHS, you get a much better connection rate, but a limited service area. With the cellular system here, you can only connect at 9600 bps which is hella slow. I can use either with the system I subscribe to, but the PHS is much more convienient and much cheaper (I can connect unlimited for 4000 yen per month)

I recently read DOCOMO of Japan is attempting to introduce a global standard for cellular connectivity, and they estimate a 128k transfer rate which is equivalent to the speed of ISDN. Vodaphone is also touting this service, and they have the global capability for the cellular service in place already.

Don't know if this helped at all. My suggestion is either wait for your location to catch up with technology, or just visit pages without any graphics.

Good luck.

when you say PHS are you refering to another protocol for celular phone transmissions or a dedicated network for data only?

also i presume when you are refering to "cellular" you mean GSM networks

about that new system used by DOCOMO i belive is the new 3G GSM system which will allow for 128kbps as you mentioned. BTW its not actually a japanese first its an european developement but of course like usually japan is the first to implement it succesfully on a large scale

Here they are broken into 2 catagories of phones:

Keitai, which actually means portable, is the digital version of the phone or the GSM. It has greater clarity, greater range, but is more costly to operate.

PHS, or "portable handy system", is another format (and the one I am accessing the net from now). The range is terrible and you have to be awfully close to a repeater for it to be effective. It is cheap to operate however, and quite popular with the younger Japanese people, especially in large cities.

This is how DOCOMO describes it:
PHS (Portable Handy phone System): PHS telephone signals are picked up by small antenna, often mounted atop NTT telephone boxes, like the one shown here. From here the PHS telephone signal is carried via ISDN to the nearest NTT exchange.

Probably the best option is offered by DOCOMO as FOMA (sorry, i am not sure what the acronym is for). It detects the closest switch and connects you on either technology. Unforntunately, the phones for FOMA are more bulky than their counterparts and the technology doesn't seem to be catching on.

I wasn't aware that it wasn't Japanese Technology, but it doesn't suprise me. They Japanese are long famous for taking other's technology and improving on or implementing it first.

well i thought docomo was GSM(unfortunatelly my sources for japanese news are mostly second hand) if they are PHS then its not euro technology

the 3G (third gen) GSM is euro tech and meant to bring ISDN data transfer levels...my impresion was that DOCOMO was the 3G developer in japan but it seems that i was wrong(guess is some other company)

here in the US the best we have is a 2.5G GSM ~60kbps and hopefully soon we should start seing 3G thanks to T-Mobile which of course is actually Deutche Telecom

Re: Laptop question

Sprint is running a 3G CDMA( Code division Multiple Access) This can provide 144kbps and it costs 15 dollars a month. This is the fastest available in the US right now. Here is a list of phones that work with this technology.

Hitachi P300
Samsung N400
Samsung A600
Samsung I500
Samsung VGA 1000
Sanyo 5300
Sanyo 8100
HandSpring Treo 300

Re: Laptop question

But I hate sprints customer service... So I would rather go with Tmobile and their GPRS, or just go to starbucks and get T-1 speed through them.
