Unhappy 95 Aurora stalls out at 70mph

Need some help figuring out what is causing my car to stall out at cruising speed. This doesn't happen til after the car has been running a while. The codes from the computer don't give an accurate answer to my problem. This problem just started occuring, also along with this the gas gauge doesn't register properly, which tends to send me to the fuel pump area as the possible cause of this. The car will restart after a couple minutes but only for a few times then will not start at all for at least a couple hours. Any sugestions

Check out the crank position sensor. It may have become heat sensitive. Happened to me.

Fuel sending units have been a problem. Probably not related to what's going on. If it flat out dies with no hesitation or surging, it's ignition/electrical. When it stops running, are all other accessories still working? Is it just engine power?

While it's in a no start situation pop a plug wire off the coil. Kinda lift it back a little so that the boot is on the coil tower. Have someone crank it. If you hear it snapping it's got the spark. A cheap thing to try if you haven't is a fuel filter I've seen vehicles not pulling hills, long starting time from them.

Another possibility is the fuel pump relay. You can test this by swapping the AC relay with it (they are identical) and see if it fixes the problem. A new relay will cost you about $10 at your local parts store. Does the gas guage fail at the same time or is it always giving false readings? If it fails at the same time and the relay swap doesn't fix the issue, then you should really look at replacing the pump. If it always gives a false reading, then the only way to fix it is to replace the fuel pump as the sensor is a part of the pump.

Re: 95 Aurora stalls out at 70mph

I've replaced the fuel filter when the event occured the first time. It took the garage I took it to 4 hrs of running to get it to stall, but he couldn't get any code that made sense to cause the darn thing to stall. Luckily the guy didn't charge me any thing cause he couldn't fix it. I brought it back home and drove it about 10 miles and got it to stall. All of this crap seemed to come about at the same time so feel that first step would be to replace fuel pump and sending unit. Answer to overtime is that the gauge reads bad all the time.

What codes are being generated?

Re: 95 Aurora stalls out at 70mph

Sorry took so long to respond to questions concerning codes generated. He did not give me the exact code but said something about ignition failure, rpm loss, and something about an alternator fault. Anyway since last post have replaced fuel pump/ sending unit assembly and so far the car has not stalled out. I've got my fingered crossed that this was the problem and won't have any reoccurences .
