Indiana is currently considering a bill "which would require all passengers in all types of vehicles to wear a seat belt. This would include pickups and SUVs with truck plates, which are currently exempt from the law." NHTSA Administrator Dr. Jeffrey W. Runge will testify before the Indiana Senate in favor of the bill. As Dr. Runge noted in a phone interview, "In the last three years, there have been 15 teens killed in pickup truck accidents in Indiana. None of them was wearing a seat belt."
The time has come to close the seatbelt loophole in Indiana and Georgia. People should be able to drive their vehicle of choice without undue government interference. However, they and their passengers need wear a seatbelt.
